It’s been awhile since we’ve heard new original material from IU, but she’s promised a double a-side of sorts, promoting each of her new September tracks with a music video. First up is Dear My Crazy Soulmate, whose title sounds more like a Korean drama than a comeback. And come to think of it, the music itself would probably function well as a drama’s OST.
Despite being promoted first, it looks like Dear My Crazy Soulmate is already playing second fiddle to IU’s other new track on MelOn‘s chart. This makes sense, since the ambition here is pretty low. The song is a relaxed, feelgood pop track, sweet and relatable and well-positioned for the kind of playlist you might put on in the background while doing something else.
IU’s voice rings clear as a bell as usual and she’s a great conduit for this sound, but the song doesn’t do much for me. It spends most of its time looping around the same simple melody as the instrumental supports gently from the back. It’s the kind of track that’s impossible to dislike but might also struggle to find passionate supporters. Rather than open an exciting new era of IU’s career, it’s like a pleasant meeting with an old friend.

It seems she decided to try a trap style here, but ended up feeling a bit constrained within a narrow box. As a result, the song sort of went in one ear and out the other, as this particular direction doesn’t quite suit her natural strengths.
More importantly, I truly hope IU is doing well; I’ve heard she has been dealing with some health issues recently. May the Lord grant her complete rest, healing, and the loving support she needs to get through this season. On a brighter note, “Unknown Planet” definitely deserves a listen! It features a lovely, dreamy atmosphere that suits IU’s vocal color much better, all while keeping the production wonderfully dynamic.

I love IU but yeah the song also did not do much for me. Its only IU voice that kept me to replay this song again and again. However, it is still nice to see IU still experimenting with new sounds even after reaching the top. It seems she had to change her album promotion schedule into this pre-release single because of her health. Hope she can recover soon.

… … I thought it was an OST and clicked away half-way through. The video is sure videoed like one. Also, noting, the music is a couple other writers with IU only providing the Korean lyrics, which maybe is why it sounds like IU vocally but not emotionally.
