MCND are one of those mid-tier groups I sometimes forget about until they make another comeback. They’ve been at it for six years now, which seems incredible. Across that career, most songs have been rated in the “7s” here on the blog, putting them firmly within “middle of the pack” territory. I’d love a big hit to break them out, but unfortunately Devil Youth Club is more of the same.

The song opens, hilariously, with a children’s “la la la” and what sounds like a Blur – “Song 2” interpolation in quick succession. This hodgepodge of sounds isn’t indicative of the song that follows, as Devil Youth Club is far more predictable and tame than its title suggests. It’s a nice rock-tinged boy group track, half-sung half-chanted and delivered with plenty of energy. The chorus is solid but not among the group’s most memorable and the track resolves nicely without leaving much in its wake. So, yeah… we’re in “middle of the pack” territory yet again. It’s not an awful place to be, but I don’t think I’ll remember much about this song in a few months’ time.
