There’s been a lot of talk about K-pop’s second generation on this blog lately, but if you really want a taste for what was popular in Korea during the early half of this era you couldn’t ask for more representative artists than Epik High and Davichi. Both have lasted the long run, still releasing music today. And on new single Mise en scène (미장센), they’ve paired together.
Mise en scène is a smart blending of both acts’ appeal. Epik High have plenty of lower-to-mid tempo tracks in their catalog, often finding success with a more sentimental sound. Davichi are most often known for ballads, though they have a few notable bangers to their name as well. Mise en scène splits the difference, framing a ballad-like vocal refrain with bouncy, piano-led production and nimble verses. It’s immensely nostalgic, even if it doesn’t draw anything new out of either artist. I would have preferred a more dynamic chorus, as the track’s centerpiece seems to rely more on Davichi’s appeal than dynamic, memorable songwriting, but those looking for a pleasant blast from the past will likely wrap themselves in Mise en scène like it was a warm blanket.

The descant high harmony that just pops in there at 2:08 just kills me. Davichi showing how its done. Listen and learn, kids, listen and learn.

I suppose this is the kind of music that we called a representative of Cyworld era. In theory, Epik High exquisite raps supposed to be a match made in heaven with Da Vichi powerful vocals. However, I just can’t find enough chemistry between these two song parts. Its not about skill issues as anyone can see they are doing a very good job. The song rap and vocal parts just did not have enough charm when being paired together. Its like one plus one become less than two. Its a good throwback to the past though.

This was a lot of fun! A little livelier than some of Epik High’s more laid back title tracks.
I think the problem is timbre. Davichi’s singing style is too different from the gruffness of Epik High’s singing and rapping, which makes the two pieces feel like they don’t fit. But seeing DJ Tukutz as the female love interest for Tablo and Mithra by itself makes this all worth it.

I found it to be a very pleasant collab ! I love it when 2nd gen artist just release songs for fun and it ends up being this good. The production overall is not that fancy, but it stands high in the nostalgia department, especially with the recycling of love love love.
