Song Review: Yuju (GFriend) – Nameless

I continue to write about Yuju’s solo music out of respect and admiration for the great work she did with GFriend, but with each new release it becomes clearer that her former group’s high octane pop music isn’t something she’s interested in replicating. It seems that she’s much more comfortable in the corner of an atmospheric coffeehouse, noodling away on the guitar and singing softly for a small crown.

Nameless (미제) is the latest in an increasingly long line of soft, moody fare that’s characterized her solo career. Her voice remains captivating, even when she keeps the ambition in her performance low. As a mood piece, Nameless is striking in places. I love the synth that pops in as a foil here and there. But ultimately, it feels like more of a vibe than a fully fleshed out song. The energy stagnates, never growing or fading when it can simply waft around the room, drawing you in for moments at a time before something else steals your attention.

  1. Oh, Yuju, why do you put yourself in this kind of box? When you step into a space where everyone looks and sounds almost identical, it actually makes the final output feel a little less endearing and distinct. However, did the Yuju we knew in GFRIEND play it safe? Did her work with GFRIEND leave us feeling like we just listened to a song anyone else could have delivered with the exact same level of energy? NO! It seems like her solo work offers a limited picture of what she is truly capable of as an artist. Hopefully, one day she’ll rediscover her own magic and translate it into her music.

  2. The song just went in one ear and out the other. I only check her song regularly out of respect for GFRIEND legacy. Hope Yuju can find her way one day.
