K-Pop A-Z: Infinite – Back

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with Infinite’s A-Z reviews here!

Back (from Back – 2014)

Infinite had worked with producers Rphabet before on 2013’s Destiny, but Back truly solidified their partnership. It’s one of the group’s most dynamic songs, growing from somber, dramatic balladry to the explosive orchestral electronics that drive its chorus. There’s a palpable desperation in both the vocals and instrumental, and the two fuse together to create an emotionally cathartic performance that brought a newfound weight to Infinite’s sound. Back is a song stuffed with standout moments, from the clobbering drop of the first chorus, to the dizzying, beat-perfect dance breakdown that follows, to the tense climb towards that powerful climax. Every member gets their moment to shine, with Dongwoo and Hoya stretching their vocals to prove that they were more than just idol rappers.

  1. Solid 10 from me too. Structural genius, with the recurring piano/synth melody effectively serving as a bookend chorus and joining under the actual chorus during the last refrain. I actually covered a super-complicated piano arrangement of this piece once. It was incredibly difficult, but it sounded fantastic played on solo piano.

  2. This is for sure my favourite Infinite song, The first drop into the synth instrumental is mind blowing I remember the first time I heard it I actually said “WOOOO”
I don’t share the same passion for Infinite that you do but this is definitely one of my all time Kpop faves
