SUMMER OF K-POP: GFriend – Life Is A Party

There are few things I enjoy more than a great summertime song. They’re bright, they’re exciting, and they remind me of my favorite time of the year.

There’s no telling what this summer in K-pop will bring, but over the next few weeks I’ll be flashing back each day, showcasing a highlight from past summers. The rules are simple: I fire up my carefully compiled “K-pop summer” playlist, hit ‘shuffle,’ and if the song that pops up hasn’t already been featured on the site, it gets a post and mini-review of its own.

So, get ready for a summer of K-pop on The Bias List!

GFriend – Life Is A Party (2017)

Though their concept might not immediately conjure the idea of summer, GFriend actually have quite a few tracks that embrace the season. Life Is A Party is a fluffy little throwback, driven by retro synths, bass guitar and a repeated drum loop. In some ways, it’s quite restrained, yet offers a take on the GFriend sound that still feels fresh. I particularly enjoy its ebullient chorus, as well as that fun little rap break in verse two. But, the track is at its best when it adds an extra, chant-along hook during its climax. This would have made a great single.

  2. This was my first GFriend mini so it holds a special place in my heart. All of it is great with this song being no exception though I must admit Ave Maria is my favorite from it.

  3. Finally! I was a bit sad back then when the Parallel album didn’t get any buried treasure, but this can count. Life Is A Party is also my favorite, very fresh and would’ve been a great summer single. Usually I don’t like aegyo sing-speak parts but this one is an exception. It feel very fun and authentic.
