Song Review: Kis-My-Ft2 – Endless Summer

I’ve always found it odd when acts release summer singles in September. Maybe it’s due to my occupation and schedule, but for me it feels like summer ends promptly at the end of August, blunting the effect of any new seasonal song. But Kis-My-Ft2 has been a longtime favorite of mine, and their music tends to be pretty adaptable – well-suited to any season you’re in the mood for big pop hooks and overstuffed instrumentals.

Endless Summer is mid-tier Kis-My-Ft2, lacking the unique personality that might make it a revelation, but catering to the group’s strengths and offering a jolt of festival-like atmosphere. Though the production comes across as quite busy, I enjoy the synth textures used. They’ve got an amiable brightness to them, and keep the track chugging along without any lulls in energy. For a song with “endless” in its title, this is almost an expected quality!

Similar to its instrumental, Endless Summer’s melodies come swift and often, stuffed into a cascading stream of content. There’s hardly a moment where the guys aren’t singing or rapping or rattling off some exclamation. At nearly four and a half minutes, this might feel overstuffed and overlong to some, but if you’re up for the ride there is plenty to enjoy here. Longtime Kisumai fans will thrill at the chanted call-back to debut single Everybody Go during the final moments of Endless Summer’s multi-pronged chorus, and I personally always love to hear Nikaido’s almost cartoon-like, gravelly-voiced rap. Even so, you’re much more likely to see me jamming to Endless Summer’s incredible b-side, Sailing.
