Song Review: Raiden x HYO (Hyoyeon) – Think About Me (ft. Coogie)

Since reinventing herself as a DJ/dance vocalist, SNSD’s Hyoyeon has become pretty prolific. Her singles often see her collaborating with a diverse roster of artists and producers, but the music has all tied together by harnessing a similar vibe. For Think About Me, she’s paired with hip-hop artist Coogie and DJ/producer Raiden, who also featured on SM’s springtime highlight Yours. That song had a playful construction and throwback appeal. Think About Me is much more straightforward.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and at just under three minutes the song certainly doesn’t wear out its welcome. Hyoyeon and Coogie make for an appealing duo, with each taking charge of a good portion of the track. Think About Me is quite groovy, with funky bass and rhythm guitar giving it a more organic feel than a lot of EDM. In many ways, this is the perfect blend of retro influences and modern touches.

Yet, there’s something about Think About Me that feels a little slight. Maybe it’s the hook, which is repetitive and sucks up too much of the song’s oxygen. Or, maybe it’s the brisk running time. Either way, I can’t help but feel like the track could have been transformed into something even stronger. It’s an incredibly pleasant listen, but tends to evaporate as soon as it’s over. Think About Me doesn’t really have typical verses, but the melody that precedes (and occasionally joins) the choruses is my favorite ingredient, particularly when it’s given more minimalist production. The arrangement occasionally reminds me of the chorus of Golden Child’s One. There’s a crisp clarity to these portions of the instrumental, which results in an engaging sound.
