Ultimate K-pop Summer Song Match-Up: ONF vs. Astro

Song Of Summer Match-UpCongratulations to Golden Child’s Let Me! Honestly, I was expecting the song to get annihilated by BLACKPINK, but the voting was neck-and-neck all day. Eventually, Let Me pulled ahead with 61.1% of the vote.

We’re down to the final match-up in this first round of the bracket. It’s the battle of the boy groups, as ONF‘s 2018 track Complete squares off against Astro’s Breathless, from 2016.

Each song puts a different spin on K-pop’s summer sound. ONF offer a shot of high-octane dance pop with tropical undertones, while Astro go full bubblegum with a guitar-driven singalong.

But, only one song can move onto the next round. The choice is up to all of you. Feel free to advocate, cheerlead, cut deals, etc in the comments section!

The vote is open for twenty-four hours, and the winner will be celebrated in tomorrow’s bracket post.

Candidate One: ONF – Complete

Candidate Two: Astro -Breathless

  1. Once again, Complete is a great song and I think I like it more than Breathless but the chorus doesn’t really strike summer for me (other than the brass, maybe). So I’m going with Breathless on this one.

  2. I never liked Breathless upon release but listening to it 5 years later I’m wondering why lol, it’s amazing (I’m banging my head to it as we speak)

  3. Went with Complete because I just like it a lot more as a song. I’m realizing lately how I tend to like most of ONF’s music!

(But, if this was a competition based on music videos, I’d go with Breathless. Not sure what is happening there but I liked it lol).

  4. It has been very interesting to see people vote based on which song is their favourite versus which song is more summery.

I want to adhere to the theme of the bracket and pick the one that sounds most like summer to me. Clinging to that deciding factor is the only thing that gets me through this choice.

Complete is fantastic, I’ve listened to it many summers, but also many winters – it is not necessarily a summer song to me. Breathless is also one of my all time favourite songs, I adore Astro’s early work. I don’t listen to it as much, though, precisely because it is so summer-specific. It’s right next to Party, at the forefront of my mind when I think of songs that just embody summer in every beat – and that’s why Breathless will be my pick today.

  5. Congrats to Let Me! Never underestimate a fandom in their home base.

Anyway, this site is also home to many a Fuse, as Nick was one of the earliest bloggers to jump on the ONF bandwagon. I am among the many who discovered my love of them on this site. Complete is one of the best K-Pop songs of the last past 5 years, and easily my favorite. Breathless is good, but really not enough to make it into the second round.

  6. I’d never heard any Astro songs before, and I tend to have expectations low for first listens, but I liked “Breathless” a lot more than I expected to! I love “Complete” and don’t understand those who say it’s not a summery song (there’s literally a section of instrumental that sounds like it’s diving underwater,) but I’ll definitely revisit both songs frequently.

After enough days visiting this poll consecutively, I’ve decided that a “summer song” is just anything that leaves people feeling refreshed. For me, this usually means dreamy synths and sounding like it was produced in a large room like in abittipsy/pporappipam/Why So Lonely/Dumhdurum. But every song can have its place in the summer (I say as someone who listens to Christmas carols year round.)
