K-Pop Risers & Fallers: January 2023

Risers & FallersRather than contain my “Risers and Fallers” feature to a single post in June, I’m going to share a bite-sized version at the end of each month. This will let me account for more songs and make a nice lead-in to the monthly round-up post.

I anticipate most of these ratings adjustments will be negligible: a 0.5 shift here, a 0.25 shift there. But, it’s a fun way to keep track of how my feelings on songs have changed over time – as well as which tracks currently have momentum on my playlist.

And remember, just because a song is marked as a “faller” doesn’t mean I hate it! Falling from a “9” to an “8.75” is no shame. 9+ rated songs occupy a totally different playlist in my music library, so I’m pretty particular about what qualifies. It’s a high bar.

This month’s feature covers the period from November 24th to January 23rd.

** Though this month’s feature covers a longer period than normal, there hasn’t been much movement due to the relative lack of comebacks and my general disinterest in them!

  1. My biggest faller is probably is probably yesterday’s unhinged enthusiasm for Aimers’ Fireworks. Yesterday I heard it as almost a worth 3rd single that RoaD-B could’ve done after Nonstop and Icarus. It still kind of works that way for me, but not really a single, more like a good album track. So, C+ or B using your rating system.

Embarrassingly enough, probably my biggest riser is TXT’s new single. I’ve moved through the five stages and come to accept that it’s serviceable. It’s not what I hoped for or wanted from them, which always gets in the way when I hear something new from an artist that I like. So for now, it’s a C. (Yesterday, I really really hated it, haha.) After Lovesong & Loser/Lover I had such high expectations, I really thought they were going to take up BTS’ mantle. But now it’s clear 2021 was an anomaly in their discography.

  3. Puzzle, Beautiful Liar and Rose Blossom have all grown even more on me. Also New Jeans OMG and Ditto kinda grew too because of how cute their stage performances were 😂

The biggest risers for me have been :

Woo!Ah! Rollercoaster – I knew this would happen! I just needed a few more listens lol.

JustB Me=Naneun – OMG I LOVE THIS SONG?! Like it went from absolutely unknown to I vibe with this so much!! It was on my Spotify playlist and played a few times recently and I really felt it was a beautiful song! I can actually see this being in my top 50 of last year too now lmao.

  4. For me, “Beautiful Liar” has just gotten better and better!! I’m completely obsessed with it 🙂 And then all my other top songs of the past few months are non-kpop, though “Ditto” and “Candy” are solid second-tier for me!

    • Agree on the k/da. The “Pop/stars” song is still on frequent rotation on my ipods.

Though I will add that MAVE sounds to me like there is someone real real singing and rapping, like Rozy sounds like someone real is doing the singing on her or its songs. AI for the imagery, and someone who needs the money getting paid to sing and rap and shut up about ever doing so.

  5. Kara’s EP has done nothing but grow on me. I was kinda afraid it was just that they’re one of my favorite groups and I’m just happy to hear them again but no, its just that good. I remember why I love them so much. Twice has my whole heart. If they do a thing it’s my favorite thing ever. NewJeans also has my whole heart. They’re so good and both of their songs were great. Probably listened to them more than any human should. I really like Vibe too. That’s the one that’s probably grown on me the most.

  6. I’ve been seeing NewJeans’ ‘OMG’ everywhere and it’s slowly growing on me
    7 → 8
TXT’s new song ‘Sugar Rush Ride’ has already grown on me and I love it. The chorus doesn’t bother me anymore.
    7.25 → 8.75
Taeyang ft. Jimin ‘Vibe’ has also risen up. Not by much though. I wouldn’t skip it if it came on.
    6.5 → 7.75
