Song Review: ENHYPEN – Sacrifice (Eat Me Up)

ENHYPEN - Sacrifice (Eat Me Up)I’ve listened to ENHYPEN’s newest album exactly one time — a far cry from playing Manifesto: Day 1 into the ground last summer. Apart from a few sparks of energy, the album is mostly composed of languid mid-tempos. Sacrifice (Eat Me Up) falls squarely into that category. It’s nearly a minute longer than title track Bite Me, and you can feel every moment of that length.

I’ve probably developed a reputation for disliking slow or mid-tempo releases, and that’s true to an extent. But as someone who grew up in the golden age of 90’s r&b, I know how crisp production, dynamic vocal performances and satisfying grooves make even a slower song stand out. While I enjoy a lot of ENHYPEN’s material, I don’t think the group is well-suited to this style. Sacrifice‘s melody feels constricted, lacking the range needed to make it engaging or surprising. Its sterilized beat does little more than trudge along for three-and-a-half minutes. It’s like hearing the same fifteen-second clip on repeat. Very little happens within the song, which forces all the emphasis on the visual aspect of its performance.

  1. I actually like ENHYPEN’s new album and this song. This song sounds incredible at night with the volume high.

    I give it an 8/10

However, I do wish they amped it up a bit. The same consistent energy throughout the whole song is the only thing keeping me from giving it a higher score.

  2. I liked Enhypen’s new EP, except the title track. I liked Sacrifice. It sounded more vampiric than the title track. Languid tempo usually puts me off, but there’s something in the instrumentals that draws me to it, and I don’t know how to explain it exactly.

  3. This is not exactly for me. Sacrifice sounds like a TXT leftover from their Thursday’s Child album, it has that dark and angsty sound. Unfortunately, Sacrifice never has enough rhythmic/topline variation to make it interesting. MV’s cool, though.

  4. All I’m gonna say is there are a lot of songs that were rated higher than this that sounds a lot worse. At least to me. But HAVE really needs to stop pitching their songs this high when they just slather their voices in auto tune at the high Bb or around that area to compensate for their lack of vocal technique. However there are a lot of moments which I really like the way the members sang the lines, but if only it was pitched a bit lower it would have sounded better and there would be no need to put so much heavy vocal effects in the high notes.

  5. Yeah, this one didn’t grab me either. It is such a pastiche of retro styles and never quite becomes its own song.

The chorus plods along on heavy beats. bahdahdahdahdah um Bum um Bum um BUM

But what I really didn’t like was that I see 7 boys, and one hear 1, all cycling around the same notes for 3 minutes straight, about C to G with brief forays a note or two higher or lower. Possibly 2 boys and an octave if I count the short low section. Its very singable for that reason, but for me it does nothing to spark joy.

    • thought i was the only one who liked this album too. tbh its not my favorite of their work but overall i find myslef listening to the whole album quite a lot! their visuals suit the vampire concept perfectly.

    • Trust me, lots of people like Dark Blood. I would say this album is very Enhypen-coded. I guess Nick and the people here are more into rock, bright, & pop genre (that’s why Nick loves TXT & Shinee). Enhypen’s discography is leaning more to the dark & mystical genre. Nick gave Tamed-Dashed a 8.5 but it’s not really hyped by general public, and gave Fever a 7 but it’s one of the 4th gen’s viral hits. Well, it’s just a matter of preference anyway 🙂
