LUN8’s debut mini album is pretty strong, but opening track Voyager sticks out like a sore thumb. Not only is it my least favorite song, but it sounds like it’s pulled from a completely different project than the rest of the material. I’m curious why Fantagio decided to promote it with a music video.
Despite a few quibbles, I thought last week’s Wild Heart was an above-average boy group release. Voyager goes just as heavy on K-pop tropes, but with lower energy and less melodic heft. The mid-tempo trap-pop beat is well-suited to summer, even if it fails to forge an identity of its own. I’m more concerned with the melodies, which have a sing-song familiarity that’s catchy but trite. I feel like I’ve heard this exact song dozens of times from other groups. At this point, it would much better for LUN8 to develop a sound of their own.
