Song Review: Hi-Fi Un!corn – Over The Rainbow

Hi-Fi Un!corn - Over The Rainbow“Hi-Fi Un!corn” is now my favorite group name of 2023. Coupled with the Lisa Frank-esque visuals of this music video, I feel like I’ve entered a retro fantasy land of Care Bears and My Little Pony. It’s definitely not what I would’ve expected from a new FNC Entertainment band.

Visuals aside, Hi-Fi Un!corn debuts within an illustrious history. FNC are well-known for their rock bands, starting with FTIsland and working all the way up to N.Flying. It’s not yet clear what distinguishes these guys from past acts, but their bright, youthful energy is definitely welcome. Over The Rainbow is at its best when it incorporates psychedelic and symphonic elements to give character to its instrumental. I love the late-song guitar solo and the grandiose flourishes that arise during the chorus. The final minute of the track blossoms into something far more interesting than its first three minutes, and I’d love to hear the band stretch themselves further in this direction.

While the instrumental holds tons of potential, I’m less enthused by the song itself. The melodies could use some sharpening — especially during the verses. The track bops by pleasantly, but could have grabbed us by the collar in the same way its arrangement does. Despite this hesitance, Over The Rainbow is a promising debut and an appealing peek at things to come.

  1. This may be a consequence of not having my good headphones, but I feel there’s a bit more vocal processing here than I’d like (especially during the chorus). And to think I thought it was just a Seunghyub thing… Song is pretty nice though, not blowing my mind, but enjoyable.

  2. I liked the song, and coming in at over four minutes, I was impressed. They have a few other songs on YT. Was that Yoo Hwesung’s little brother?? Sure looked like him!

  3. They are the winners of Idol Band Boy’s Battle with Cn Blue as producers. It’s Yonghwa who made the song for them. The show being release in Korea and Japan and with Shuto as a Japanese member, they will promote a lot in Japan. There are 2 versions of the song.

The song suits their name :p
