Song Review: WEi – Overdrive

WEi - OverdriveEvery year around this time, a handful of idol groups release summer-themed albums. I look forward to these projects, as their bright, upbeat sounds tend to match my taste. WEi are the latest to embrace the season, unveiling the buoyant Overdrive (질주) to promote their sixth mini album.

I should absolutely love this track. It plays with many of the sounds that embody K-pop’s summertime fare, even bringing the guys to the beach for its music video. The song bounds forward with amiable energy and a fun performance. The first verse unveils a nice melody, supported by tropical synths that seem poised to grow into something spectacular.

Unfortunately, I’m not a big fan of Overdrive‘s chorus. Its opening notes throw me for a loop, and not in a good way. I’ll give WEi points for doing the unexpected, but when it comes to a summer track like this I long for melodies that are more ascendant and commanding (especially with a title like Overdrive!). Instead, this is a cheerful toe-tapper. The song is hard to dislike, but also feels like a missed opportunity.

  1. The song does have a few charms, bopping along, sung through.

The chromatic notes in the chorus is the hook. That is the part I like, the interesting part to me.

  2. I really like this! the verses are great. I’m not too bothered by the first half of the chorus, and the second half has a soft of nostalgic melody which saves it for me.

  3. this is an alright rocker, the opening notes in the chorus were a choice, but i got around it

anyway, i love it when i look at the “Top LGBTQ+ anthems” lists on Rolling Stone and Billboard and see the 99999th pseudo-self empowering “this is my fight song” song sung by some middle aged woman appear on the lists

side note: i fucking HATE “fight song,” its everything wrong with corporate empowerment “anthems” that feel patronizing as hell, coupled with the world’s most plodding chorus
