GRAVITY

Ah, the pensive album-closer. K-pop loves a pensive album closer.

Here’s the deal: Whenever I see the title of this song, my mind immediately reverts to this banger. Or, better yet… this song-of-my-life epic. So, you can’t blame me for feeling deflated by what turns out to be… a pensive album closer.

SHINee do this well. Heck, they do pretty much everything well. Gravity‘s light pop sound and finger-snap percussion is instantly soothing and enjoyable. It’s the album’s coffeehouse moment, offering an atmospheric bop for fans to sway along with. Their vocals sound lovely (I feel like I’m writing that about every track) and they infuse the melodies with as much character as possible. The layered chorus is especially nice, delivering a suitable centerpiece that gives the track more swing. Gravity isn’t the style of song I’d go out of my way to listen to on its own, but it works well enough in the context of the album.

  1. Give me R&B SHINee. I love this song. This is a song made for Onew and I’m a sucker for his voice. He could sing anything to me and I’d be happy. This song is a very good way to end the album.

In all I love this album. Its what I wanted them to come back with. Something fun. It’s experimental in the beginning and very R&B in the back half. It updates their sound without relying on nostalgia to sell it. Satellite, Identity, The Feeling, and Sweet Misery are probably my favorites. This album flows really well and shows why they know how to make great albums. Their music will always make me happy and I’m so glad we got a new album from them.

  2. I love their singing in this, definitely one of my favorites in this album. I am a sucker for Onew’s tone, so a enjoy a lot how soothing his voice is before the chorus.

  3. I liked the closer for their last album, Kind, a lot. This one isn’t doing as much for me.

The Kis-My-Ft2 song is great. I just listened for the first time. They really go for broke.

Anyway, it sounds like we rode a similar roller coaster with this album, Nick. In my own, as you put it, blissful delulu alternate reality, this is what happened on Monday:

  4. It’s a super pleasant listen, and I love the swing to the rhythm. It’s not a song I would actively seek out, but I would happily sway along if it came on in the background.

  5. I enjoyed reading every review and most comments about the album…thank you!

The first song that caught my attention was Satellite, followed by Like It and Identity. These three are excellent songs in my opinion and I’d rate them 9/10.

The rest of the album is forgettable to me.

  6. I also think of EXO’s Gravity straight away, there’s just no comparing the two. I knew nothing could top that one. But yeah I feel the same, it works well as an album closer. Thank you for doing the in depth album review ! SHINee will always release work worth talking about, and I’m glad to see them spotlighted in any capacity.

  7. It took me forever to finish watching all SHINee’s comeback show, interview, live, etc. of this comeback.
I think I agreed with some follower here, when we said the title track is too NCT for SHINee. I also read in somewhere here, Nick said that he’d like SHINee to continue to produce their signature sound, even though he knew it’s selfish of him to have such wish.
But after watching SHINee comeback, listening to their thought, their feeling, I’m content with it. SHINee members, they know who they are, they said it themselves, they can do the same thing over and over, but they choose to be different, they want to try something new for them, they enjoy working hard and create precious memories together.

Taemin used to be a perfectionist (he still is) and workaholic. If his performance has just a small flaws, he’ll be upset about it, even though no one recognize it. But after everything they’ve been through, he said he want to appreciate the memories more than ever. He’s more relax, happier. And I hope the other members feel the same, too (Please do well, Onew).

I’m just glad we have more SHIINee’s content to watch everyday. Because just watching them can make me feel happy. 🙂
