Song Review: TXT & Jonas Brothers – Do It Like That

TXT & Jonas Brothers - Do It Like ThatIf I had a time machine, I’d go back to 2016 and tell myself that – in seven years – I’d be writing the words “& Jonas Brothers” in the title of a blog post on The Bias List. It’s been quite a journey, my friends. Who would have ever thought we’d end up here?

Actually, the newest Jonas Brothers album is pretty good. It would have been fun to hear TXT’s vocals on one of its yacht rock-leaning tracks. Instead, Do It Like That aligns more closely with the candy-coated radio pop of BTS’s English-language singles.

Gosh, bubblegum pop music is surprisingly difficult to pull off! What makes a song like the recently-released Candy Kiss from Travis Japan so addictive, while Do It Like That feels like it’s aiming to become an advertisement for Target or Old Navy? I’m not quite sure myself, but Do It Like That definitely approaches “cloying” territory. “Cloying” is soooo close to “fun.” They’re like neighborhoods in the same city, just an alleyway apart.

Maybe it has to do with how often a hook is repeated within the space of 156 seconds. Maybe it’s about how closely that hook replicates the repetition of a whistle or playground chant or jingle. Maybe it’s simply down to how corporate a song can sound — how forced the fun feels.

Whatever the case, Do It Like That is absolutely harmless fluff. It’s even kind of fun in a goofy, who’d-have-ever-thought-this-would-happen way. But it’s neither a great TXT song nor a great Jonas Brothers song, making it feel superfluous to both discographies.

  1. I like this one a lot. It sounds much more Jonas Brothers featuring TXT than the other way around. Its very much their sound. I love it though. TXT fits so well on Jonas Brothers songs. This was a great collaboration.

  2. I really enjoyed this song, though it’s certainly light and fluffy. As much a meal as candyfloss.

Would’ve liked a bit more substance to it and a little less chorus, but all in all a good song.

  3. As someone who couldn’t make it further than 3 songs into the Jonas Brothers album (the first song was good), I can’t say that I like any aspect of this song. It just feels so devoid of anything unique, interesting, creative, or artistic. The production is mediocre, their voices are autotuned to death, and that chorus is honestly pretty irritating. I get how this could be passable in the background for other people, but this is pretty much a non-starter for me.

  4. This is good and lighthearted fun. It fits TXT as it isn’t so far from what they have done before. Jbros and TXT seem to have good chemistry here and the transition from jbros to yeonjun don’t feel awkward at all. I think it deserves at least an 8 (and fun fact it’s produced by Ryan Tedder)

  5. Alright, bright and poppy!

And sounds like Old Navy. I see 8 people and hear 2 or 3. The rest all mush together. And look, signature dance too.

Also, the hook really does wear itself out by 1:30 but the song continues until for another full minute. I have been road tripping this holiday week, and was reminded how much content the Beatles and Beach Boys could pack into a two minute song. Surfin Safari clocks in at 2:06. Help 2:18, Yesterday 2:03.

  6. I can’t say I am disappointed because I did not have any high hopes with this one, but I am a bit irritated. If this counted as a TXT comeback (it doesn’t), it would be bottom of my list. The song is harmless fluff like you said, I guess? But it does not go anywhere and is so painfully generic for me. I feel like I didn’t find anything new in the song or the video beyond what they had already teased. Definitely sounds more like a Jonas Brothers ft TXT than the other way around, as someone said in the comments. There were almost no solo lines, and most of the time, it did not even sound like them because of the extreme vocal processing. I am just a bit upset that TXT is wasted on this when they could’ve used the promotion time to release a good single by themselves. I even like Jonas’ music, but I don’t think this did it for me.

    • Thank you 👏🏾 finally an HONEST review. I think when it comes to big name artists (esp. BTS) ppl tend to be blinded and “love” whatever they put out even when it sounds generic. And this is always a problem b/c,in the end, it’s like an artist losing their identity meaning that anyone could’ve replaced TXT (or just take them out completely) and it’ll still have the same result.
Also I HIGHLY AGREE abt the overly processed voiced (i.e. autotune). It’s like a HYBE trademark now to have all their artists in autotune (which is a huge turn off for me 🙅🏾‍♀️)

  7. First off, it’s odd to see facial hair in a K-Pop video. This song is alright. As a decades long McFly fan, I can’t help but wish for a McFly K-Pop collab that really turns up the energy and volume.

    • I never thought that about the facial hair before, but that’s so true. It’s also nice (but odd in context) to see some spots and texture on the J Bros skin.

  8. “Harmless fluff” is a perfect way to describe this one. On the other hand, I was close to getting fed up with it during the listen, and, thanks God, that failed to happen. Still, I fear the song’s gonna wear me out really soon, considering how commercial jingle-like it sounds…

At this note, would be, idk, maybe a 7.5 for me.

  9. I actually like this song. Only thing I would change is the autotune (Because, the chorus sounds robotic)

    7/10 (good for me)

  10. It’s cloying and corporate but this kind of fluffy bubblegum is absolutely TXT’s sound. The song itself is Americanized blue hour, and anything that sounds like blue hour is a hit with me.

    • It may be their sound, but it’s not their execution. Blue Hour was a hundred times groovier than this and bright songs like Crown have their own perspective that are on a totally different level.

      • That is true. It’s absolutely not on the level of their best examples of this sound, but it’s definitely something they haven’t done in a while, which is what made me think of similarly toned songs in their discography.

  12. I really liked the start until it gets repetitive at the 2nd half of the song. The feeling you’ve been robbed of the climax when the final chorus feels a “lifeless” fun song.. wished it has a more impactful final chorus though.

  13. This is very BTS Dynamite. Fun and catchy, but a bit flimsy – like a sugary snack that tastes great but won’t really fill you up. I’ll take ia sugary snack over a bowl of porridge anytime, though.
