Song Review: Mirae – Jump!

Mirae - JumpI’ll be forever side-eying DSP Media for abandoning Mirae’s promising futuristic concept to turn them into just-another-boy-group. Since then, their music then has seen highs and lows but lacks continuity and vision. Jump is another sonic swerve, borrowing elements from early-90’s hip hop and fusing them to a rather pedestrian song.

I like this group a lot, and even followed their variety appearances for some time. However, songs like Jump feel like placeholders instead of memorable singles. The sound is bright and fun and well-suited to summer, but the hooks are dull and the production hedges its bets instead of fully delving into the strengths of its influences. The New Six’s Kick It 4 Now already gave us a stronger take on New Jack Swing this season.

Jump gets bonus points for never segueing into some ill-fitting tempo change (its bridge comes close…) and the guys are clearly strong performers. I just find most of this track to be borderline grating, fueled by a flimsy chorus and repetitive structure. Frequent readers are probably sick of me comparing so many songs to Sexy Zone’s recently-released Chapter II album, but just listen to how they were able to flesh out this same sound on Make You Mine.

  1. It is neither close enough nor far enough away from the 90’s Hip hop classic “Jump Around”.

  2. I thought you would have really liked this Nick! 😂 It just seems the kind of straightforward bright boy group song you would usually like… Does it being Mirae kinda make it different? 😅

I don’t blame you really ; even I agree Killa was peak material. That year had some amazing boy group debut songs (Killa, Damage, Breathe Again and guilty pleasure Excalibur). In a way Mirae never really reached close to that even though some of their songs were still vibey.

This one is kinda pleasant and fun too. I actually liked it musically a lot. I read the review before listening and I was a bit on the fence after seeing the comparison to get TNX’s latest song which didn’t really grip me.

I liked this one better. The chorus and bridge were really nice and as always their voices are great! I also liked the rap segments!

    • It just doesn’t have enough meat on it for me. It all feels very surface-level and predictable. Maybe I’m just not in right mood for it at the moment, though.

      • Yeah that’s quite possible lol. I had a long day and was in the mood for something easy listening and pleasant today and so this just felt right 😂

  3. I really liked this. I don’t get the comparison to Kick It 4 Now because that’s a lot more melodic and vibey, while this one’s a bit more percussive and fun-ner sounding. It sounds a lot closer to Younite’s Everybody, actually.

I feel like we’re being a lot harder than we should be on Mirae for having such a strong debut haha. All their singles after (except for Splash) – Marvelous, DripnDrop and now this one have been quite enjoyable. Ig DSP shouldn’t have given us hope for what we thought could be, but I still look forward to whenever Mirae’s coming back – and this one doesn’t change that. 8.5 from me.

  4. This is kind of there for me and I’m a HUGE Mirae fan. They always perform the hell out of whatever they’re given, but eh. A couple of nice b-sides though.

  5. I like this one better then their previous releases, although I do miss the sound they were working with during their debut. To me, this sounded more like ATBO’s last relase rather than TNX’s, both were two of my favorite boy group releases this year.

Overall, not bad plus I’m always a fan of the 90’s early 00’s influence, especially when it’s done properly.
