Song Review: Oh My Girl – Summer Comes

Oh My Girl - Summer ComesI’m a sucker for a great summer K-pop track, and we haven’t had many of those this year. Enter: Oh My Girl — with a track that’s literally called “Summer Comes.” It’s been a long time since we’ve heard from the group, and they have a bulletproof back catalog to build upon. Their take on a summer anthem should be a slam dunk, right?

Well… not so fast. Summer Comes (여름이 들려) is as frustrating as it is enjoyable, which has been a common theme in K-pop this year. At its core, I love the buoyant, bounding energy of the track. It’s very reminiscent of Collapsedone‘s work with groups like Twice and fromis_9. The problem is that — although Summer Comes throws a lot at the listener — very little of it sticks. Its slam dunk winner comes during the second half of the chorus, where momentum finally climaxes and we get a taste of that pinwheeling summertime energy.

Sadly, the verses play fast and loose with tempo and arrangement, making for a haphazard structure that fails to capitalize on the song’s strengths. But Summer Comes‘ worst offender is its vocal mixing. The girls’ voices are rendered almost unlistenable at times, oddly pitched and metallic as if they’ve been run through a computer with a faulty or loose connection. I don’t know how or why you do this to a group as gifted as Oh My Girl, but it’s an approach that seriously sinks Summer Comes‘ chances.

  1. im kinda surprised with this rating because this is easily the best song in kpop recently, i would give at least an 8.75

i mean yeah the mixing is kinda awful but its just… FUN. especially the second part of the chorus its basically a tongue twister

  2. It’s certainly overstuffed, but it’s a lot of fun! like above i was also a little miffed at the rating. it’s bright and sprightly and while the audio mixing is a tad much and very unnecessary, it doesn’t diminish my enjoyment of it.
also the music video is lots of fun! kind of a return to form for oh my girl mv’s in their quirky wtf-ness that real love dropped the ball on.

    • I think it really depends on how much the mixing bothers you. Had that been fixed, this would probably be an easy 8.5 for me. But I have a really sensitive ear towards this kind of stuff, unfortunately.

  3. Thank you! I was thinking the same, that there might be a good song buried in here, but I was too distracted by the tinniness of the sound. Almost unlistenable. I even tried it with my earpods off my phone and my computer with plugged in ear buds, same effect. And OMG have really good vocalists. whyyyyy wtf wth. Where is Bae~ to swear copiously for me?

  4. The second part of the chorus is a totally winner. It’s no wonder they started the song with it. I also enjoy any oh my girl song that utilizes mimi a lot. The mixing really should’ve been better but luckily it doesn’t make it unlistenable for me

  5. Hm, I do kinda have mixed feelings about the song, while I do think the fast-paced vocals on the chorus sound interesting, and as you pointed out, the second part of the chorus has a good climax, I think the song still needs to grow on me and I don’t see myself being back to it yet. It reminds me a bit of Bungee, but the later having a more consistent energy for me.

Also, I probably would’ve liked it more if they removed Mimi’s verse after the first-chorus.

  6. Not my favorite OMG summer song as this looks like the child of Nonstop and Dun dun dance. It got a bit too noisy in the middle that I feel like tired listening to the song and I would have to check the timeline to see how long the song is…not sure if it’s because I got used to the super short K-pop songs these days or because of the mixing of the song…
Also, I wish they use the girls’ vocals better as WM simply has the best vocals in the industry. Right now, the only voice that stood out is YooA’s voice in the pre-chorus…

  7. Just listened to the album and I feel like I’m not used to the flow of tracks. I find that my
favorite oh my girl albums tend to have songs with their own distinct vibes. While enjoyable this mini blends together a bit too much for me . Maybe with more listens my perspective will change but I’m a little let down

  8. Never thought I’d say it, but there’s too much here. The song is filled to the brim.

I’d personally work a bit more on mimi’s raps, make the hook even catchier and cut like 20% of the lyrics?

Agree with the overall rating. I initially thought the hook was a bit weak, but realize that has more to do with the production than the chorus itself.

  9. I’m listening to the song on Spotify now and it feels like I’m listening to a badly ripped reupload on YouTube by a random person–how I consumed a lot of my Kpop 12 years ago admittedly, so I probably have built-in tolerance haha… It doesn’t grate on my ears, but it makes me wonder why the mixing got approved.

The song is nice though! I like it, the chorus is great. Dunno if I’d playlist it but it’s pretty solid.

  10. oof what a mess. I find even if I’m overwhelmed on a first listen, I can parse out the key melodies and hooks by the second. this is overwritten. the beat sounds really strange with the vocals. overall a letdown. also miss jiho.

I’m a friend we are never getting “remember me”, “windy day” “fifth season” “secret garden” “closer” OMG back. and that’s a shame.

  11. The song is a mess. It feels like 3 songs jammed into one. The video however is a fun mess and I kinda love it even if I have no idea what’s going on. The one lady is beating up a dude and then poses with Pikachu ears and then goes back to beating the dude up. That whole thing is a weird incoherent mess but the video was fun.

  12. Found it to be barely listenable. To begin with, I got overstuffed as hell, also the reason why the comeback appeared to be instantly forgettable. However, the worst thing is the production, feels as if the song could’ve been produced through an old broken PC. Eww damn, how shameful that such a fun summery bop easily turned into a bummer!

Rating is way too high, imho. 6.5 for me at best, with the production earning 5 and everything else getting a 7.

  13. For a song that sounds like it’s supposed to be easy-listening, it feels like I’m constantly being poked in the ears.

Idk if it’s the mixing or what, but everything is too blunt and too close.

For real, it’s weird that the melody is so easy-listening but the production is so aggressive.

As I’m writing this I’m on the second chorus and already forgotten the first half of the song.

Middle of the 3-stage bridge is decent, at least? First time in the song I got excited.

  14. Literally Dun Dun Dance with massive sound effects. Sounds like what e.one will do with a Ryan Jhun/collapsedone track. Sound effects are overly packed, which makes the song more unenjoyable given its pace.

Mixing is bad, but honestly the best one can do with such a huge number of sounds. Resolution is inevitably tarnished.

Underlying melody is generic yet not bad, wish they developed more on that.

IMO I thought the bridge was pretty awesome though, if not one of the bests of the year. The transition was just silky smooth.

The album is pretty generic but of fair quality. Mimi is undoubtedly the star of the album. Her raps are just on point.

  15. would’ve been my favourite summer song of the year if not for the mix… bruhhhh who did that to their angelic voices and the other elements also don’t mesh well -_- missed potential
