Song Review: ILY:1 – My Color

ILY1 - My ColorWhen we last saw ILY:1, they were mining Oh My Girl’s old production team for a glistening facsimile that became an early 2023 highlight. With the changing of the seasons, the group has also changed its influence. This time, My Color targets an early-GFriend sound — a style I happen to be an enormous fan of.

Unfortunately, the group was unable to secure mega-producers Iggy & Youngbae, making My Color more of a loving tribute than an extension of this “powerful innocence” approach. As tributes go, it’s pretty spot-on. We’ve got the bright keys, spiraling strings and bounding beats. The song swells and surges in all the places you’d expect. The only missing ingredient is an equally-strong melody. My Color is decent in this regard, but misses the catchy, anthemic hooks that usually characterize this style.

Instead, the track settles for easy and breezy. It builds to a solid moment of release with a well-placed, harmonized power note, and even hints at guitar during its final moments. But like ILY:1’s last single, the performance doesn’t bring a level of heft that would make My Color stand out. Even with these missed opportunities, I’ll always be happy to hear a new girl group song tackle this buoyant sound.

  1. Literally 4th gen April.

Well-written verses, fair chorus and bridge, sounding a bit too safe. Could have used more strings/brass to give the song more texture.

The b-sides were unexpectedly good, though of course in a generic way. My Colour is still undoubtedly the title, showcasing ily:1’s characteristic ‘orchastral’ sound.

Use of retro beats in this album was interesting. Definitely an ear-catching factor. Unexpectedly went well with higher-pitch sounds, which gave some warmth to the overall soundscape.

Mid 8 for me. Be it more refined and innovative, it’ll perhaps get a 9.

  2. Even if it doesn’t fully compare to some of the hits from Gfriend, OMG, and April which had similar sounds, this is definitely their best title track so far. They should really stick to songs like this and Twinkle Twinke which have a more toned down orchestral sound vs their earlier bubblegum pop concepts. Sad that their sales keep decreasing though.

  3. I think this is closer to Lovelyz than GFRIEND, or, honestly, still early Oh My Girl (RIP OMG, you haven’t had a good song in years)
I only know one April song so can’t compare like M did.

Same problem as the Saturday track: it’s not neither interesting enough nor pretty enough to make me want to listen to it again. Like I’ll probably play it as background noise, but it’s not something I’ll seek out.

  4. This song is actually good but sadly due to problem like money, it limits the group for example, the group growth, MV production and more.

I hope they can stand out more, tha part of this song that stand up for me is when the song started it’s giving the vibe like “hope” which I really enjoy. I believe they will grow and even have bigger fanbase someday.

  5. The 2016 vibes are strong in this one. The section shift at 0:59 reminds me a bit of SNSD Into the new World “Sarang hae …” at the start of its chorus.

If it were released back then, it would be in the middle of a muddle. These days, it gets a half or full point extra on nostalgia alone.

  6. This is leaps and bounds above the Saturday song, I have to say. They simply have a much higher budget than the Saturday girls who seem to be really shoestring at this point, so that’s probably part of it. But I find this song really charming and energizing, if not especially groundbreaking.
