Song Review: The Rose – Alive

The Rose - AliveAfter revealing the rocky, anthemic pre-release Back To Me last week, The Rose have returned with their latest single Alive. Like Back To Me, this is an English-language release. It sees the group tackling a groovier sound than normal — even incorporating a dubstep-influenced breakdown before the bridge.

This experimentation is welcome, especially since I found the band’s last album pretty underwhelming. Alive is a solid track. I wish it leaned harder into its more idiosyncratic sounds, but the guys deliver a pleasant, head-nodding mid-tempo that will likely grow more addictive with time. I like the mix of resonant percussion and atmospheric synths. A more explosive chorus could have enhanced the song’s energy, even if the end result is rhythmically satisfying.

  1. I liked the guys’ new cb. Was satisfied by the track’s punch, even in spite of its lack. Although that dubstep breakdown…ehh..sounds so oddly out-of-place, that I just couldn’t.

Rating is about right, though I’d personally lower the production to 7 and bump the longevity up to 9.

  2. ‘Back to me’ and ‘Alive’ definitely don’t hit as hard as their previous releases but even still, they’re great songs. Could have been amped up a bit though. The chorus is good but lacking something.

  3. I was so disapointed when I saw they were coming at the Montreux Jazz Festival and I was in Munich to see P!nk at the same date >_< For once, a good Korean group was very near my home and I missed it. I think it was the first time the festival invited a Korean group too.
