Song Review: The Wind – We Go

The Wind - We GoI’ve been enjoying the heck out of The Wind’s early-Gfriendcore concept. In my eyes, they’re doing everything right so far. By working with a small, dedicated team of composers, they’ve quickly developed a signature sound characterized by buoyant production and big moments of exuberant catharsis. Last week’s pre-release Summer Vacation has grown into an undeniable 2023 highlight. Following that song, title track We Go takes them in a slightly more formulaic direction while retaining the charm of their youthful, hyper-melodic vision.

We Go offers a driving beat, bolstered by rhythms borrowed from drum-and-bass but wrapped in an effusive arrangement that hardly leaves space to breathe. It’s a sonic sugar rush and fares better on its own than paired with the relentlessly cute music video. A little youthful sunshine goes a long way, and I tend to prefer focusing on the impressive musicality of these productions.

Apart from a few ill-fated slowdowns during the pre-chorus and second verse, We Go is another winner from these promising rookies. It builds toward one of their patented power note climaxes, immediately following a cool, chanted bridge. The chorus is pure ear candy, pulled along by a rip current of childlike enthusiasm. Over time, I’ve amended both of The Wind’s song reviews to a “9” rating. So, even though I prefer their explosive Summer Vacation at the moment, I’ll dust off my 9’s for this one.

  1. Personally, this is easily my favourite song from them off the bat. It took me a while for Island to grow on me, while Summer Vacation was a bit stronger at first listen. However, I was drawn to the song through and through in a way that it reminds me of Gfriend’s best. I don’t think it would even be scandalous of me to give it a 10 right away to be honest. It is just a hit.

  2. Yes. Yassssssss.
A spritely song that sounds like kpop. The tempo bursts out of the gate and doesn’t let up. Contemporary flair with the skittering percussion. The guys are adorable selling the shit out of the song. Actual verbal hook to stick in the mind “we-go-we-go”. I go I go yes on this one.

  3. This is cute and bright! Definitely stronger than Island and Summer Vacation on first listen. I think the rap chant parts could be removed completely, personally they really drag the song down (the second verse right after the chorus made me wince, I could do without the bridge since it breaks the immersion).

  4. They still remind me of early Golcha in some parts and it tugs on my heart strings. They seem super sweet and this concept is a strong one! This is another lovely song, with more direction and better hooks than the previous one I listened to (I am not sure which one that was anymore).
