Song Review: tripleS LOVElution – Girls’ Capitalism

LOVElution (tripleS) - Girls' CapitalismI’m gonna need a doctorate to keep all these tripleS sub-units straight, but one thing they all share is a dynamic sense of style. Even when the songs don’t quite hit me, I’m impressed by the vision behind this enterprise. It’s quite reminiscent of LOONA’s multi-year rollout — another Jaden Jeong project.

LOVElution is the fourth (please correct me if I’m wrong) unit to release music, continuing to build tripleS’s idea of a “decentralized” idol group where members switch between various configurations. It’s a bit NCT in this way, though the music is very different. The cleverly-titled Girls’ Capitalism fits within the sonic wheelhouse the group has developed so far, delivering an easy, breezy pop sound that’s slightly retro but comfortably slots within today’s trends. It’s a pleasant (and yes, stylish) vibe, but like most of tripleS’s work so far I’m having trouble generating a ton of enthusiasm for the music. I imagine slotting this song on any number of playlists, but as connective tissue rather than the main course.

I love Girls’ Capitalism‘s use of backing vocals, which buttress the pre-chorus with an airy texture that makes the track perfect for summer. This continues into the post-chorus — easily the catchiest moment. The songwriters struggle to fill in the rest of the track with equally memorable tunes, blunting Girls’ Capitalism‘s overall effect. It’s relentlessly pleasant and occasionally exciting (that climactic guitar solo!), but I’m still waiting for a tripleS track to completely bowl me over.

  1. Generally a brighter and laid-back Generation. Song could’ve been cut to 2-2.30 mins as it gets boring after the 1st chorus. See, this is what happens when songs ignore their melodic part. Groove is pretty good though.

Was expecting for a rap to burst out but…nvm. Good production as always, basically a role model for other groups. Rating is accurate.

B-sides still shine though. Black Soul Dress and Speed Love sound very promising.

  2. Its a bit of a chore to listen to.
Have ever seen someone get the giant bowl of pasta with giant meatball at some chain Italian restaurant? Its like that. The pasta is plentiful and just salty enough, the sauce is good, the meatballs is fine, but though all that adds up to good, something about it just makes it too.

  3. Quite tired of all the La La La’s. It was refreshing when it was in Generations but at the point it’s no longer compelling. This song is pleasant enough, but it has hard time sticking in memory. Feels more like a Persona 5 background music than an actually compelling song. Will check B-sides to see if anything sticks out.

  4. I’ve really been interested in the very different vibes each unit has given us and this is no different. The song is cute and I like the message for their demographic too – truly they sold me from ‘I’m the key to my heart’ and the general concept of investing in self while loving yourself – so I’m looking forward to this mini tomorrow quite a bit.

  5. The concept/central idea blew my mind because it’s the first time I’ve seen it in a female kpop song with this lighthearted treatment. It’s not the best song but wow how enjoyable it is!
