Song Review: Secret Number – Starlight

Secret Number - StarlightSecret Number have averaged two comebacks a year, displaying a sonic versatility that makes their music hard to pin down. Not all of these songs have been equally successful, but I’m always curious to see what they’ll do next. New single Starlight gives them a spacey, synthy makeover.

When this video first started, I thought we were in for some cool, WJSN-esque celestial pop. However, Starlight quickly reveals itself as something else. Its chorus plays with a few nice sounds and textures, but I hate the verses. They have this cloying “oompah, oompah” rhythm (and I don’t mean the Red Velvet song!), married to trap beats and a sing-song series of melodies. They feel like they’re pulled from a different track entirely and effectively neuter the effect of the chorus. Beyond these missteps, there just isn’t enough in Starlight to keep me engaged.

  1. Talk about a bait and switch. I feel like the video quality was the best at the beginning too. The chorus isn’t even bad but it doesn’t make up for those unlistenable verses. I really miss early secret number; they seemed poised to be dance pop queens. I want nothing more but for them to release a song that I liked as much as “got that boom” ( even though that was noticeably

    • I posted it too early….
I was saying that got that boom wasn’t even instant for me, it was a grower. Secret number keep doing different genres to see what sticks but the songs just aren’t very good

  2. Very mid. Feels like whoever wrote this just rushed through most of the parts and called it a day. I can see why this was only a digital release.
