Song Review: Jeon Somi – Gold Gold Gold

JEON SOMI - Gold Gold GoldGeneric as it may be, I still love Jeon Somi’s Fast Forward. It’s fun to hear club music infiltrate K-pop and she makes a convincing dance diva. Unfortunately, the rest of the album is grab bag of genres — some more fitting than others. This is evidenced by opening track — and follow-up single — Gold Gold Gold.

While Fast Forward is everything I’d hope Somi would pursue, Gold Gold Gold is everything I’d beg her to steer clear of. It’s an irritating novelty track, filled with boastful sing-talk and vocal fry. I’ve heard worse in this specific sub-genre, but these kind of silly, sing-song “empowerment” tracks rarely do much for me. Gold‘s rap verses are fun and cheeky, yet can’t salvage the repetitive chorus. With moments like these, Somi’s recording career remains frustratingly inconsistent — pinballing between highlights and lowlights.

  1. A rap-focused song with incredibly weak lyrics about having a lot of money? Groundbreaking. Why, in the year of our lord 2023, are we still doing this? “Gold on my this, gold on my that, gold on my wrist, gold on my yeah”??? Only wrist has any specificity and the watches thing is so tired. What are we doing folks.

Somi is sufficiently charismatic that I don’t truly, absolutely hate this, but if it was pretty much anyone else I would. Similar feelings as I had about Lisa’s “Money”.

    • This seems all YG Ent and TBL can write about. Money, flexing and being hotter than anyone else. I love Somi and I hope she would go somewhere else. Just like Lisa, she deserves better.

  2. Fast forward was incredibly generic and not even remotly interesting enough to listen to it again tbh , but gold gold gold is truly one of tje worst kpop songs i’ve ever heard

  3. This is exactly like Lisa’s Money…awkwardly so, just without the already-built stage persona Lisa has. Honestly, the song comes out of nowhere and feels off. Think there is a certain recycling trend in Somi’s work, as Anymore was just like Gone by Rosé but with some odd, silly lyrics instead… Having in mind Somi writes most of her songs or at least is part of the process, she’s never beating those Blink allegations.

  4. It feels like something meant for Lisa. The rap is killed by the blaccent and prove that YG just simply loves CA. They do not care at all.
