After releasing the rocky Let It Be Summer last week, Young K is back with the title track to his first full album. Nothing But (이것밖에는 없다) tones things down, echoing the more pensive guitar rock of his band DAY6. I’m sure longtime fans will be delighted to hear this sound make a return, but I was hoping for something more distinctive from his solo work.
DAY6 have released a ton of stronger songs in this style, making Nothing But feel a bit like an afterthought. Young K has proven his songwriting bonafides time and time again, so it’s no surprise the track is solid and polished. There’s a palpable sense of emotion throughout as Nothing But ebbs and flows in all the right places. However, it’s lacking the compelling, evocative melodies that could transform it into something special.

As a long term fan of DAY6, I agree this definitely pales in emotional impact compared to some of their previous work. The chorus is strong, but the rest of the song feels like an afterthought.
The album itself is not great. A lot of filler tracks, a lot of short tracks. DAY6 have been consistent about having most of their songs above 3 minutes, so seeing numerous songs on this album below the 3 mark makes feels sad. Young K is clearly a talented singer-songwriter but I feel like he’s stretching himself too thin, focusing on quantity of releases over quality. He’s put out 16 tracks since his military leave (April ’23) which is inevitably going to come with less attention to each one.
I really hope this is not an omen for what’s to come with DAY6. These guys have so much potential and their discography is so strong. I sincerely hope they can continue to focus on quality.

I really love Day6, and it’s been interesting to see what the members release individually.
I like the overall feel of Young K’s music, but the songs rarely quite get there. It’s like it’s missing the catchy hook or the big chorus. It’s a shame, and it’s a bit disappointing. I’ll give it a few listens and see if it grows on me.
I wonder if Day6 do best when songwriting as a team.
