Song Review: Blackswan – Cat & Mouse

BLACKSWAN - Cat & MouseAmidst all the big-name comebacks today, girl group Blackswan have a stealth attack in the form of b-side Cat & Mouse. The song was previously released alongside title track Karma back in May but it’s now enjoying elevated status with a newly-released music video.

I call this a ‘stealth attack’ because the song is legitimately stronger than anything else released today. It’s a nice blend of funky percussion and airy melodies, crafting a vibe worth getting lost in. There’s a steadiness to the percussion that puts you at ease, pulsing along its addictive rhythm from beginning to end. It’s not the kind of track to draw attention to itself, but its modest hooks work well within this understated dance framework.

I’d love to hear more in this style from Blackswan, especially given the video’s campy concept. It’s nice to feel like you’re having fun alongside a group rather than being told or forced to enjoy yourself.

Trendz with their “8.5” rating on their song today would like to have a word with you 😂

  2. I preferred this to karma when it first released, it’s such a good fit for blackswan. The video isn’t crazy expensive but the jovial vibe makes it one of my favorite from the year

  3. Idk, this just kinda does nothing for me. I feel like we tend to give Blackswan “extra credit” because of the crazy history of the group and because it’s interesting and kinda cool to see (as of recently) a kpop group without a single member of East Asian decent (let alone Korean). But while not bad, I find this song very generic, like a Fromis b-side that probably wouldn’t get a Buried Treasure review. They certainly pull it off well, but I’m sure there’s more unique stuff they could be doing.
