Song Review: V (BTS) – Blue

V (BTS) - BlueHYBE’s love for releasing multiple music videos from each project really messes with my review system! Do I write about every one of them? For a release as high-profile as V’s solo album, it seems silly not to. Yet, I find myself essentially copying and pasting my thoughts from song to song. I’m not sure if that says more about me or about the album in question!

One thing’s for certain: V has definitely created a vibe with this project. This is not the kind of genre-hopping album that holds a little something for everyone. You can play these songs back to back and simply swim in the laidback grooves and hazy atmosphere. I appreciate the focus, even if this style of music isn’t often for me.

So, how does Blue stack up to previous songs? To my ears, it’s the slightest of them all. There’s not much I picked up on when listening to this — no cool instrumental breaks or standout melodies. It may just be the vibiest of these many vibes, and works best as one sequence in a series of like-minded tracks. As its title suggests, the production takes its cues from blues music, driven by muted guitars and a steady — almost mournful — beat. It’s successful in its intentions, but those intentions could stand to be a bit more ambitious. When it comes to the blues, I want to viscerally feel every note of the song. Blue simply washes over me, momentarily engaging but quickly forgotten.

  1. I am sure he will do better in future , when I heard his live duet with IU that was so mesmerising, surely he has great vocals but big hit is not paying much attention to him not guiding him where to use this that is the problem

      • That is right choosing her was his worst decision ever, as we see all she focuses on his visuals; even though he chose lofi jazz she was not the good option for it, he could have find an expert for it then this album would have been better, kinda feel bad for his fans who are trying so hard to have his songs in charts as I have seen recieiving all criticism from other stans fighting for him in every site at least he should that and appreciate it that is all I want from him

  2. So as I was saying, in my generation we soothed our weariness of daily living with songs titled such as “Hell is for Children” and “Living on a Prayer” and “King of Pain” “Against All Odds” “Never Surrender” and “We’re Not Gonna Take it”. Rrrahhhhr, sticking it to the man, the system, the unfairness of it all.

Songs with lyrics like “Daddy only stares into the distance, There’s only so much more that he can take…” and that’s the nice lyric in the song. Live live with 3 guys in the band.

I mean, if this whole album vibe soothes your existential angst, well, you can have it.

  3. Listen to one, listen to all. It’s a very consistent album with all songs having the same vibe. Surely there will be someone who likes this style but it’s just not for me…

I think you have to reconsider what to write – otherwise it will be like you writing a complete review for the whole album in the future if they keep messing up with MVs…which I think it’s not necessary in this case. K-pop trend this year – songs under 3 minutes and just loads of MVs which all look shot on iPhone…

    • Yes, I think Nick should amend his style. My first instinct would be to write *sigh* and leave a score, but that is me. Picking up on an idea here, perhaps for the under-3’s he could write for under 3 minutes, on an iphone with autocorrect, or just talk to text extemporaneously, and it automatically posts when the timer is up. And =done=. The disposable era of pop.

Unfortunately Nick’s real gig is a librarian, so he does prefer to follow his own set of organizational rules to write a proper write up for all the major releases with MV from the major players. It’s his thing. I mean, have you seen how extensive the indexing on this site? Must … catalog … it ALLLLLLLL.

  4. My review in the comments for the first 2 songs was that Taehyung was not pushing himself artistically and that he’s wasting a beautiful voice. That “review” still stands. I love his voice. I love him. I love the blues. These songs are a snoozefest without depth in his tone and I don’t believe a word/note of his expressed pain and loneliness. For these songs to work, his voice needs to be saturated in expression and that has not happened. The performance with IU was the best and I highly suspect that was because she raised the bar. Otherwise, releases and performances have been somewhat lackluster. At least he’s prettier in this video.

  6. This is my least favourite song from the album. I am very sad to say this because I really love Taehyung and his voice is beautiful, but his album is the one I like the less so far from all the BTS solos, it’s not that I don’t like it at all, but I expected a little bit more. Waiting for JKs album though.

  7. Blue is a melancholy kind of song if you get what I mean, the only thing I didn’t like about it was it was too short for me, I love his storytelling in the whole album, the young man is a genius

  9. It’s pretty clear this entire album is going to be a take it or leave it all for most people. The only question is how many will be forcing themselves to take it for the sake of some absurd notion of loyalty to a celebrity. That’s their business, not mine. I definitely have my lo-fi days when (due to a health condition), I can’t take too much sensory input without my body “confusing” it and expressing it as pain (the TL;DR ver. of CRPS). But what gets me here isn’t it so much being a vibe-y album. It’s that I feel no connection between the performance and the production. It sounds like the vocals could have been recorded and the beat and groove just chosen later and smashed together or vice versa. Even the lyrics and emotions just don’t come across. It sounds like he’s bored, and the production somehow flattens that out even more. He could be singing some 90’s New Age gibberish type lyrics for all the connection there is. For me, even if I listen to a song like this, I want to feel that ache of missing something in my soul, but the best I can do for this is slot in some “music to fall asleep to” playlist that I put on a few times a year.

Can I insert clapping hands emoji here?
He sounds bored (and lazy) in most of his songs, period.

  10. Well, it doesn’t really matter what you guys thinks though. Tae is good and it has nothing to do with his visuals alone, the guy’s got brain and talent and he did marvellously well with this album. He did said in his interviews that he isn’t gunning for any #1 charts but for everyone to see what other genre of music he can do and that he was happy doing them. At the end of the day, isn’t that the Most important thing? We are so engrossed with chart breaking that we loose sight of real good music. This album is not just music, it is art, emotion and creativity and I will say he brought those out 100%. And I love love everything about the album. And it has nothing to do with army trying to cheer him up or fighting to get him there, it has everything to do with appreciating good music. So your reviews or opinions doesn’t really matter. But it is sad though that some who don’t even know how to write music or even sing would come up and criticise a beautiful piece of work/art like this.

So like someone already said, the sales are there to show its worth. Peace
