Song Review: Kep1er – Galileo

Kep1er - GalileoMore often than not, Kep1er’s b-sides tend to eclipse their title tracks. Check out Back To The City, Together Forever and MVSK to see what I mean. They’ve yet to promote a song that connects with me in the same way, but with a possible contract extension in the works they may have more time. New single Galileo steers them in the right direction, offering a fun burst of upbeat pop.

The track builds off Giddy‘s bass-driven funk, upping the tempo and expanding the groove. It’s explosive from the first second, and this energy fits Kep1er well. The verses follow a sing talk style, but they’re well-constructed and catchy. The same can be said about Galileo‘s confident chorus, which acts as a natural high point with layered backing vocals and splashes of brass. It’s addictive without becoming cloying, though we’ll see how resilient its simple hooks will be over time.

Galileo swerves into a fun dance break during its bridge, adding a nice dose of bombast to an already ebullient track. Every moment is anchored by a truly sticky instrumental. This groove is infectious, providing a solid through-line for Kep1er to work with. The song relies heavily on this funky backbone without resorting to obvious instrumental drops. Everything comes together in a satisfyingly glossy package, making this one of Kep1er’s strongest title tracks.

  1. This and “Up” are my favorite title tracks of them definitely, a solid bubblegum pop song and their voices fit this style very well!
I like that they have organically come to establish themselves in this type of funky, R&B-influenced music without leaving behind the things that have characterized their music from the beginning, such as those dance break moments that always inject energy into the song.

    • By the way, although there isn’t much to choose from, these are my favorite b-sides from this EP, but I must say that they are far from touching their best b-sides like Back to the city, MVSK or Dreams.

  2. i like this a lot better than giddy! giddy wasnt that bad either for me, among the fearless lookalike songs, but like, this kind of cheery bubblegum just fits kep1er way better (which is also why up! is also another favorite of mine)

the dance break + 2nd verse with bahiyyih and xiaoting were my favorites… yeseo’s 1st verse surprised me a bit, it was good and i didnt know she could sound like that wow

checked the bsides out and they are pretty solid as well, forgot which one but one of them was like a spiritual successor to mvsk (also fits kep1er’s sound well, in my opinion) but overall galileo as the title is for sure the standout track for me

  3. Yooo this song is so good! I agree it’s their best one so far.

I have it in my head during the day and it doesn’t annoy me like most k-pop songs recently. This song is a really fun ride 🙂
