Song Review: Jini – C’mon (ft. Aminé)

Jini - C'mon (ft. Aminé)Soloist Jini was briefly a member of JYP girl group NMIXX before leaving at the end of last year. Free from the “mixxpop” concept and backed by a new agency, she’s returned with her first EP. More and more, K-pop soloists have been leading the charge for new sounds, unburdened by structural constraints that often mar idol group tracks.

C’Mon is a satisfying take on this year’s girl group trends, offering the cool sleekness of groups like NewJeans and LE SSERAFIM but tying it to a more effusive instrumental. Its electro bass is exciting from the get-go, providing a clear rhythmic through-line that makes the subdued verses feel… less subdued. This is countered by an exciting chorus that ups the energy substantially. I love the vocal filters and layering used here. It sounds more like indie electropop than K-pop, and that sense of effortless cool makes Jini one to watch.

A brief rap by guest artist Aminé feels superfluous, but delivers a nice jolt that keeps things from becoming too one-note. I think the production could go even harder than it does, but C’Mon‘s quiet-to-loud approach is quite compelling on its own. On a day stuffed with new releases, this is the standout.

  1. 2017-2018 me would absolutely devour this song and instantly make it her Song Of The Year. I quite liked the song too but I’m still not used to someone like Jini being a soloist, y’know? They’re countless idols in groups who would rock being a soloist/going solo, but it feels kind of the opposite for her? Idk, maybe after 2 comebacks my thoughts will change

  2. The chorus production and arrangement is pretty great. But the vocal performance and production is so strange. In a way it has that HYBE, washing any personality sound, but when it leans into layering and effects it becomes quite ethereal and beautiful.

Not to be harsh, but I enjoy the song more than Jinni’s performance.
Would be cool to hear one of the LOONA soloists go at this.

  3. I love this debut. This song and the whole ep are like a solid 10/10 for replayability for me. Now, we haven’t really seen Jini at her absolute best yet with this debut. JYP first introduced us to Jinni, who seemed like center showgirl material, but kinda put her on the side when they debuted. But now, with this solo debut, it’s like a clean slate and things are only gonna get better from here. This release is a good teaser to what’s to come, and I’ve really missed seeing her smile on stage. Jini’s one of those idols who lets you see how much they love performing.

  4. The rap felt completely unecessary, but this song and entire EP has been on constant repeat. I cannot stress enough how much I loved this despite coming into this with no expectations from Jini as I’ve disliked Nmixx and Mixxpop. Might be EP of the year for me, so cohesive and a perfect night time driving songs. I was grooving to the beats so much I even went outside in this cold weather and sat my ass down just to play it on repeat for an hour to immerse into the mood 10/10 every song on this EP

  5. It’s a pleasant song… not sure if I’ll come back to it, but it’s already better than the weird Nmixx mix and match output.

What we really want to know is, what’s the tea behind her leaving JYP? 👀
