Song Review: Super Junior-L.S.S. – Suit Up

Super Junior-L.S.S. - Suit UpSuper Junior-L.S.S. made their debut last summer with the fun Close The Shutter. They’re the sixth Super Junior sub-unit, consisting of members Leeteuk, Shindong and Siwon. Beyond the unique configuration of members, I’m not sure if L.S.S. have a specific musical goal different from Super Junior itself, but thus far their songs have veered toward novelty and humor.

Suit Up is their debut Korean track and gives them a slick retro funk sound. This is a tried-and-true musical playground for Super Junior. At this point, I feel like they can cast off songs like this in their sleep. I really like Suit Up‘s blend of instrumentation, from synth to guitar to sprinkles of 90’s hip-hop. It’s bounding and bright and actually brings more personality than the guys themselves.

Sadly, Suit Up‘s hooks aren’t as strong as this production. Too often with funk pastiches, the instinct is to mug and swagger your way through the track rather than find melodies as sharp as the instrumentation (just ask Hui…). In the case of Suit Up, the melodic pre-chorus is much more enticing than the actual hook. But taken as a whole, this is still good fun.

  1. I’ll admit, the chorus bummed me out a bit when it first hit because of the lack of singing, especially after that prechorus. However, the song’s a ton of fun, and that’s exactly what it’s meant to be. So it works for me! Close the Shutter still has my top spot from them though. That one gets so stuck in my head if it shows up in my shuffle.

  2. Functionally, it isn’t that much different that “Black Suit” or “House Party”. As a release, its more of a placeholder to have fun and make music while SuJu regroups. (Kyuhyun having signed with Yu Hee-yeol’s label, and D&E setting up their own.) I mean, when did Super Junior not have fun and humor with their music?

SuJu have the official subgroups. And then a shed load of side singles by solo, duos and trios in multiple combinations. Whoever is around and wants to. Its a rather unique situation in kpop.

“Ceremony” is my pick from the current Leetuek +Shindong +Siwon series. It reminds me of Charm of Life from 2017 with Heechul +Shindong +Eunhyuk ft Solar of Mamamoo.

  3. I always appreciate a group that’s willing to have fun and not take themselves too seriously (which does not equal not taking their music seriously). They’re just so solid at it.

    • In the absence of BooSeokSoon, I’ll gladly take this 🙂
Feels almost blasphemous to say about a group that is so senior to BSS and probably inspired them a great deal.
