Song Review: POW – Valentine

POW - ValentineAfter a promising pre-debut single, rookie group POW’s subsequent songs didn’t hit me as hard. Their agency seems to be throwing many different sounds at the wall, which is always a tricky prospect when a group is first starting out. New single Valentine switches things up yet again, playing around with tempo and tone but struggling to craft a cohesive identity of its own.

Valentine embraces elements of the trendy drum-and-bass and garage genres, melding sprightly percussion to more reserved melodies. It’s a pleasant mix, but with its repetitive hook and modest ambition the song doesn’t quite break out. Its final fifteen seconds build energy and hint at a robust mix that would have served the song well. But with less than three minutes to fill, Valentine isn’t allowed the opportunity to grow into much more than a vibe. I’m not a big fan of the affected vocal performance, either.

  1. It just seems to me like it’s trying very hard to emulate New Jeans’ sound – but for all I know that sound is a general trend already, I haven’ t kept up. This kind of music will never really be for me. I need a little more energy.

  2. As someone that likes the DnB sound, the chrous falls flat for me, which is a shame cause the verses and the pre-chorus are actually pretty good imo.

    • While during this January I had a general problem with songs not sticking to me as memorable (by this I don’t mean longlasting, but how much of the song I can remeber on the first listen), this one stuck with me after I just heard it. And as much as it definitely doesn’t scream longlasting at me, in any possible way, it still feels like one that will kinda stick around until the end of 2024 I’m guessing.
