Song Review: ICHILLIN – Demigod

ICHILLIN - DemigodICHILLIN’s music has been on an upward trajectory lately, and last month’s Bite Me impressed with its edgy beat and exciting energy. The girls aren’t wasting any time with a follow up, releasing new digital single Demigod just weeks later.

This song shares so much with Bite Me, succeeding and struggling in the exact same ways. Once again, the track plays it easy with a repetitive, spoken-word hook. And once again, the strength of the production and performance compensates. Demigod is more hip-hop informed and brings me right back to the mid-2000’s with its loose, funky groove. There’s a great sense of space within the instrumental. Rather than overstuff things, each element shines. I love how the slapping percussion competes with cinematic strings during the pre-chorus, then later tussles with rhythmic brass during the hook. I don’t even mind the anti-drop chorus this time around because the beat is so addictive.

A go-for-broke climax would have truly set this over the top, similar to what The Boyz achieved with the explosive bridge in last year’s Watch It. But more than anything, this and Bite Me have me questioning how ICHILLIN suddenly became one of K-pop’s most exciting girl groups!

  1. I’m glad they’re finally on your radar, but I think their material like Alarm and Kick-Start is a little more fun to listen to. They’re very good at infusing their songs with infectious, bright energy.

  2. i really like this. production is well placed, not overstuffed, catchy but not hollow. the song doesn’t exactly actualize its momentum, but it never really loses it either. a yes from me.

  3. I’ve had a listen and well… the song mentions ‘half and half’ a lot – I think that describes where I’m at lol. I can vaguely see myself in the future reaching out to grasp this song and fully understand it but right now it’s just not quite there here for me.

However that doesn’t mean I don’t like it – that prechorus is stunning and the girls sound nice so there’s that. No more than an 8.5 to me.

In other news, apparently Blitzers have auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent????

    Baffled, honestly.

  4. I had hoped from the first 20 seconds that this could would should be a female response to Stray Kids “God’s Menu”. Instead for me it just kinda fizzles out. Also volume. It isn’t nearly loud enough. I turned my computer volume up 3x what it was, and it gets better.

Now there is something that G-idle could tackle. A female response to some big bombastic boy band song, “Goddess’s Menu” if you will.

  5. How much I enjoy a song is usually inversely proportional to how much rapping/talking happens in said song. Not always, but usually. That being said, this one’s not for me.

  6. Stray Kids’ music is something I usually appreciate more than enjoy. Like modern art, I guess. I think it’s cool conceptually, but I don’t listen to it for fun.

This has exactly the same effect on me.

Also, I wonder if the demigod theme has anything to do with the recent Percy Jackson revival.

  7. i like them more and more with every release, this was so good. Much prefer this sort of trajectory as opposed to a group that just loses me over time
