Song Review: Super Junior-L.S.S. – Joke

Super Junior-L.S.S. - JokeAs Super Junior-L.S.S.’s releases have gone on, the material has felt more and more like a joke. Now, they’re saying the quiet part out loud with the appropriately titled… Joke. It’s hard for me to see this sub-unit as anything but novelty, and I guess novelty has its place in the pop landscape. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have too big a place on my own playlist.

Musically, Joke is… bad. A canned funk beat frames a song that’s largely composed of silly sing-talk. As far as I can tell, the guys are singing poorly on purpose, which I guess is some consolation. However, it doesn’t make Joke a pleasant listen. Its hook is obnoxious from the get-go, and repeated often. And even worse, the song is not funny.

So, how do you rate a song that seems to be intentionally bad? I could pull my own “joke” and give this a “10,” but that wouldn’t be particularly funny either.

Hooks 2
 Production 6

  1. OMG. I saw the notification and read your post and saw that “2” rating lmao.

Can’t believe we got songs in both sides of the rating spectrum and we’re only one month and a few days into the year lmao.

  2. You know, a while ago, I was thinking “damn, Koong by xikers is the first song in 4 years to be rated a 3. Who knows, sooner or later, maybe this year, we’ll see a song rated in 2s?” Looks like, my intuition was correct 🙂

For this song, however, I won’t say it’s worthy of a 2.75. When I think of songs rated below 5, I think of abominations such as Eternity’s and Episode’s debut, Koong, Nada’s Trippin’ and the like. This song is more of like “what the hell? This is just too stupid to abhor!”— tries being unserious and silly, but poorly executes it— instead of “I need new ears and a brain cleanse to forget this monstrosity”. I’d personally put it in the 5s at best, low-4s at worst, but opinions are opinions and I respect yours.

Also, who knows, in 2025, there will be a song rated in the 1s?

      • I hope Eternity goes back to their AI-generated vocals and instrumentals for their next comeback, cause I’d pay to see Nick revise his ratings system to allow for zeroes lmao. It’s gonna be hard to beat 1.25, but it’s Eternity, so it’s not entirely impossible ig.

      • Eh, can’t say for sure on the objectively bad one. The song is your generic boy group shouty badass-wannabe song, but happens to do it in the worst and the most stereotypical ways with the messy production, excess autotune (they really butchered my man Jinsik’s notes in the song) and the random “KOOOOOONG” shouts and the random “Koong! Koong! Shoong! Shoong!” onomatopoeias for the chorus. For me, the song is best at low 5s and at worst at high 3s/low 4s, so, in this case, the ratings was right
But ofc, it’s your opinion and I respect it!

        • Right, I am entitled to my own opinion. And part of it is that the negative outlook people have of this song, especially on this blog, is too extreme for what is an average bg hip-hop track. “Badass-wannabe”, “generic”, and “excessive” are flung around far too often for songs that you, as an individual, simply dislike. You can dislike what it does without saying it’s a bad song.

If I went around saying Spring Day was a 3/10 song because the vocals were weak and the song’s production felt lazy, it would be because of my own taste, not because it’s a bad song. And so on and so forth.

  3. Personally, I thought it was more listenable than C’mon (though maybe that’s because the volume was real low), and keeping in mind that these guys probably aren’t planning to promote this at all (?) and are just having fun being bonkers and shooting ridiculous MVs, I don’t hate it. Doesn’t mean I’ll listen to it again voluntarily though, heh. And seeing your rating on it definitely gave me a good chuckle this morning. I was wondering if you would review it at all after I listened, hahaha.

  4. I had to check this out because of the rating…it feels like they tried to do BSS and ended up with SNL. My worst song in recent memory is still Attitude by ATBO (it got a 5.25 on here).

    • Came here to see if anyone else made the BSS reference

It really just sounds like a worse Fighting – it’s only 2 and a half minutes but it feels like forever. The production itself isn’t half bad – I’d certainly have some kind of temptation to check out the instrumental but the melodies over do nothing to elevate it instead sucking all the life out of the song. It’s so maddening!

The only funny thing about the song is how laughable of an attempt was made

    • It really is a bit sad when the seniors that probably inspired BSS end up poorly copying them. Super Junior can do better than this, but it seems like this subunit just doesn’t really…care.

  5. I aam so sorry, but if you don’t like the genre doesn’t mean that it is a bad song. They are so good and the song is so good!! I loved everything!
