Song Review: LUN8 – Super Power | The Bias List // K-Pop Reviews & Discussion

Fantagio Entertainment’s new boy group LUN8 has had an oddly fractured debut roll-out. They emerged late last spring and then followed their title track with a sub-unit release in the fall. New single Super Power marks their first official comeback as a full group, and sounds very little like any of the tracks they’ve released thus far. Such is the nature of K-pop, I guess!

Nowadays, brighter funk energy has become the norm for boy groups, and Super Power follows this trend with a generous dose of amiable energy. It never puts its own stamp on the genre, but bops along with plenty of excitement. Its English-language chorus is catchy from the start, washing over the listener with breezy ease. The verses are less exciting, employing a sing-talk approach that fails to land any memorable punches. I’m much more interested in a few production flourishes that pop up during its conclusion. When tackling funk, I wish groups like this would go full bore. Otherwise, we end up with material that’s perfectly nice but hardly galvanizing. This is likely to get lost in the shuffle over time.

I think you’d prefer the b-side Now more. I get your criticisms, but it’s still a bop for me! also, the English version lyrics are cracking me up. “Maybe it’s the way you ride it all night”, “I can’t wait to get up under you”…

Oooh, I really liked this one. I thought there debut was really good and was confused why they debuted a subunit following that but hey, kpop companies decisions rarely make sense. These kids have nice tones and i’m always a fan of more singing than “rapping” or sign talking. I also enjoyed Pastel. I was worried because the song had a more mature sound but they pulled it off well.

This song also reminded me of Younite, they have a few funk inspired b-sides that I reallly enjoy.

And i’m glad that boy group producers have moved away from the noise, shoutty, clanky, pot and pans sounds. Its okay sometimes but let the kids have fun, smile, and sing.

I find this one very pleasant, I like their vocal tones, the way it’s sung, and that it’s not a song that tries hard to do something dramatic and then fails at it. I see a classic, tried and true relaxed formula, although it’s legs might be short.
