Song Review: VVUP – Doo Doom Chit

VVUP - Doo Doom ChitThough seemingly benign in its silliness, the phrase “doo doom chit” has big shoes to fill. It recalls memories of the colorful Crayon Pop — a goofy pop act with the songs to back up their gimmickry. K-pop’s girl group trends don’t exactly favor this style at the moment, and could do with a bit of “doo doom chit” to break up all the subdued moodiness. Enter VVUP, a pre-debut group who plans to bring “unique positive energy” to the industry.

Unfortunately, this “Doo Doom Chit” comes complete with one of those awful, BLACKPINK-style drop choruses. What begins as a fairly standard badass girl group track with tropical influences changes gears completely as we plunge into its centerpiece. This seems to be the musical trend that will never die, and it’s sad to see a new group succumb to it right out of the gate. The less said about this weird chorus, the better. It’s catchy in its own way, but destroys any momentum the rest of the track has been building.

On the plus side, there are some nice vocal tones buried in here. VVUP clearly have potential and should be able to rise to the occasion if given a stronger song.

  1. Oh bless their hearts. I wish these girls the best of luck as they are doing their very best to sell the shit out of shitty material. They deserve better than this.

    • One of the members, Hyunny (the one with the braided pink string in the MV), was on a survival GG show I watched (My Teenage Girl) and it sucks that she’s here with a poorly produced pre-single. She is INCREDIBLY TALENTED (I could honestly see her as BabyMonster’s 8th member) and I’m sure the other girls are very talented too. But yeah, the perfect sum to this is “bless their hearts” and “I wish them the best of luck”

  2. Two major momentum killers: Pre-chorus and the chorus.

The weird thing is that it could have been avoided if they had just interlaced the chorus through the rest of the song.
