Anyone remember short-lived boy group MASC? They had a couple of bangers, but unfortunately disbanded before they could establish much of a discography. Members Heejae and Ireah appeared on last year’s Peak Time series and have re-debuted as duo SEVENUS.
The idea of a duo is highly underrated in K-pop. They all exist in the shadow of TVXQ, but over the years we’ve had a couple great pop pairs. JBJ95, anyone? SEVENUS have all the qualities of a standout duo, and debut single Want You Back is a nice — if generic — showcase. The guys have opted for a sunny pop/rock sound, uplifting and bright with classic melodies and straightforward delivery. I’m craving at least one element that sets this apart from its many musical peers, but the guys have nice voices and the punchy chorus gets the job done. They’ve caught my attention. Now, they just need to grip me.

Technically they already debuted as Sevenus last year, right after Peak Time ended, with a mini album (and also had another single that they promoted separately a couple of months ago). Those songs are much more laid-back than this one, though I quite liked the title track Summer Ride in particular.
They really were a standout on Peak Time, so I’m heartened to see them being able to continue as a duo! It’s been a while since we had an emphasis on highlighting vocals this way. It’s clear that although they do both dance, they’re much more suited to vocal-centric stuff and that’s so refreshing to see. I really do hope they continue to develop their sound in this vein, and challenge themselves with more vocal material.
