Song Review: Lucy – The Knight Who Can’t Die And The Silk Cradle

Lucy - The Knight Who Can't Die And The Silk CradleDuring Lucy’s first two years after debut, they felt like one of the freshest acts in K-pop. Their music overflowed with ideas and hooky melodies that kept me coming back for more. Since then, they’ve settled into a reliable niceness. I’m not sure if it’s them or me, but I haven’t been able to muster the same enthusiasm for a new Lucy title track since… 2021?

Given its simple animated video, The Knight Who Can’t Die And The Silk Cradle (못 죽는 기사와 비단 요람) might not count as a full-fledged comeback. Regardless, it sees the group continue to develop their hearty, anthemic rock sound. It’s hard not to imagine this as an anime theme, and hearing it twenty-something times in that context would probably tease out some of the nuances and make for a more resonant experience. As it stands, Knight is a solid, driving rock song with a pleasant, sing-for-the-rafters chorus that feels like a call to arms. I miss some of the group’s idiosyncrasies, but this slots in perfectly with the more fantasy-informed side of their discography.

  1. I really liked this and I generally dislike Lucy. In fact this is probably the third song in a row I’ve liked from them. But they’re sounded more “rock-y” which is more my reference point. Appros of nothing, I think I have the same paintbrush pattern that made those pink flowering trees in Procreate on my iPad.

  2. The song sounds like it was written from the head instead of the heart. Technically accomplished but lacking soul. More fitting lines into a structure to make it sound good then to groove along to make it Feel good.

For example at 1:00, the turn around is crammed in there because they needed to have a turn around right about there, and functionally it works but it isn’t pretty.

  3. Quiet thread, off topic comment:

The new n.ssign song out today is also good. It took a few plays to hit me, but it does now. The song is a bit like something SM Station would release. EXO if they were still around might have done this song.

  4. I agree that I don’t like most of Lucy’s title tracks of the last ~2ish years as much as their earlier stuff but I loved this one! Great pace and energy throughout. Also I know I can count on Lucy to give me some 4 minute songs, love the instrumental outro.
