Song Review: woo!ah! – Blush

woo!ah! - BlushK-pop loves nothing more than to run a trend into the ground. You’ll get a fresh, exciting debut track (ITZY, NewJeans) only to see years of middling copies that suck all the charm from the sounds you first fell in love with. We’re currently in an age of what many have called “easy listening” girl group fare. These songs take trendy club sounds and extract much of their energy until we’re left with a vacuous sliver of a song.

Unfortunately, woo!ah! have become absorbed by this monolithic approach. They’ve been on a roll lately, releasing the strong Catch The Stars and Rollercoaster back to back. Now after sixteen months away, they’re back with the ultra-trendy Blush. This is another one of those tracks that just sort of wafts by, featherlight and stuffed with sugary hooks that feel more like ringtones than fully-fleshed out ideas. It’s airy and bright and might have sounded kind of awesome had we not been stuck in this trend cycle for nearly two years now.

Fans of this sound will find much to enjoy here. The melodies are catchy and insistent, even if most are either sing-talk or truncated little catchphrases. There are some nice harmonies throughout, but to me the song feels like elevated elevator music. It creates a pleasant haze but never really compels on its own. It’s pop music evaporation, more vapor than water.

    i call it lobotomy music. also, i’m disappointed that the lyrics aren’t “i feel like money” lol.

  6. This was dissapointing, not bad, not great, just kind of meh. They could have kept this, i’ve enjoyed Wooah since debut and will forever love “Bad Girl” but this wasn’t it for me. It was like a lighter version of what the other girls are doing and once Nana said Moonlight Sunrise, I just kind of checked out. Their company had ample time to give these girls a more interesting comeback..oh well.

  8. I’ve never thought woo!ah! had a very strong identity, but I’ve always had a soft spot for them. This song feels like a whole lot of nothing. It’s so inoffensive that it’s offensive.

  13. This song sounds like LE SSERAFIM and PinkPantheress have a baby, and this is not a compliment.

    I do like UK Garage type-beat music, but I really wish when K-pop is using these type of beat could make it more bombastic, either through a strong melody or solid vocal would enhance the overall music journey.

  15. The ending of this review hits hard.

    I’m quite fond of wooah which is the only thing that will make me come back to this track. The chorus is repetitive and not catchy. while I like the part the follows it, I don’t know how “I feel like money” relates to blushing.  it’s pretty easy to distinguish the tones of the members in this group yet this song manages to flatten all that

  16. I am admittedly kind of tired of this sound and never really loved it from the beginning. But I will say, I prefer iterations of this more than I preferred the noisy girl crush-esque sound that used to be really popular. At least this stuff only makes me sleepy, doesn’t make my ears hurt.
