There’s not a great deal of consistency across Solar’s new album. Placing a song like Colors right next to title track But I is crazy whiplash. You could say she’s painting with a variety of tones and stretching her wings, but it doesn’t make for a cohesive listen.
I’ll let others decide for themselves how appropriative the song Colors is (because really, the entire K-pop industry has become appropriative) and how authentically Solar inhabits Colors‘ queer, drag-adjacent stomp. My take is that the track was definitely recorded with love but its performance isn’t particularly believable.
As a song, there isn’t much to Colors. It’s designed as an album intro (for a completely different album, mind you!) and mainly consists of Solar listing colors she covets. Never mind that “black” and “white” are technically shades, not colors. The track is completely spoken-word, making me wonder how it might sound if it had been fleshed out with a shot of melody. Thankfully, the thumping catwalk beat and crackling energy compensate for Colors‘ sparseness. It’s a fun listen, even if you could hear better (and wittier) iterations on any episode of Rupaul’s Drag Race.

not that bad but it’s not good either. I’m glad she hired ballroom/queer dancers though, it made up for her awkward voguing in the mv lol.

Well, the beat’s kinda fire though. Wish there was more to it. Like, if the song was like Chungha’s “I’m Ready”, I’d like this a lot more. Wish there was more melody and less talk-singing
8.25 for me (8, 9, 8, 8)

This will definitely stand out more for the gimmick than the song itself (inst kinda cool tho)

If I was a pitcher of mimosas down at drag brunch, this would be the greatest song ever. Since I can’t drink like I used to, this is still fun if you’re sober. However, she looks amazing and the dancers are fierce.

I wanted to post this. DUH.
Not drinking hasn’t improved my attention span.

It’s Bob the Drag Queen, purse first.

I appreciate this song and video more than I like it. Also sounds like an ad for …. … something that comes in black, white, or pink options.
Speaking of black and pink options, sharing this gem from a few years ago.

Now you have me imagining “Colors” as the soundtrack to a scene in the Barbie movie haha

I think I like it. It’s kinda what I thought Le Sserafim would sound like, rather than the softer route they’ve taken lately.

I feel like only someone that has not followed Solar’s career coulds ay Colors’ ‘performance isn’t particularly believable’

I love it tbh. I think she sells it well, with fun, and her bringing the dancers to a music show seems like a significant moment. Mamamoo have a strong queer following in Korea, so I think it is a nice and loving gesture to embrace the community and give these dancers a mainstream spotlight.

I think it is incredibly unfair and inappropriate to say, that her performance isn’t believable. Mamamoo has actively supported the LGBT+ Community through all of their career like no other kpop group. Also it is not the first time Solar has interacted with the ballroom/drag scene.
Additionally she wrote and composed Colors all by herself. She gives solo spotlights to the dancers and I saw one dancer saying, they were able to chose their own outfits freely. It doesn’t get more believable.
Not enjoying the song, because it doesn’t fit the personal taste is totally valid, but saying she is appropriating the queer community is simply wrong and a very uneducated take.
At the end a thread with only the major things, that Mamamoo has done to support the community: https://twitter.com/stillwithbyul/status/1787779721020993634?t=hfm6ASntiz_RSUw5ykcbKQ&s=19

Unpopular opinion: Solar shined brighter in a group. As a soloist, she’s just not that good…
