Song Review: Jeonghan x Wonwoo (Seventeen) – Last Night

Jeonghan x Wonwoo (Seventeen) - Last NightIn between being part of the biggest K-pop group on the planet, the members of Seventeen have found time to slowly but steadily develop side careers as soloists and sub-units. Unit tracks are usually divided between their Dance, Vocal and Hip-Hop teams, but albums have occasionally featured duo recordings as well. This is the first time the formation has been utilized for an official comeback, with members Jeonghan and Wonwoo taking the helm. I’m not sure what inspired these two to work together, though mega-fans probably have more insight than me.

Last Night offers a slick, evocative soundscape driven by plucked guitar and chunky bass. Rather than develop a hearty chorus, the track rests on a catchy synth loop — the kind Seventeen themselves were particularly fond of around 2017. This isn’t a new structure, but it’s been out of the limelight long enough to feel somewhat fresh.

The balance between Jeonghan and Wonwoo’s high and low tones works well, even if neither are given much to do. The bulk of Last Night feels whispered, almost as if the producers loved the instrumental so much they forgot to develop a full song around it. This results in a satisfying mood and successfully develops tension, but delivers little payoff in the end. I keep waiting for something big to happen, but the song is content to cycle around its few tricks for three minutes.

  1. I’m not sure what inspired these two to work together

from what I’ve seen among fans, it’s that they might enlist together soon.

song is fine. it sounds very late mid-to-late 2010s especially the post-chorus. that Nox and Nox line is so random it’s making me crack up

  2. Ahhh, I love it! Of course, I am very biased, ulting Wonwoo and all – but something about this song’s easy groove was super charming to me. I love their vocal delivery. The acoustic guitar really twinkles throughout. Reminded me of another song I’m enjoying lots lately, Lure by I.M, Soloist/Monsta X.

I see what you mean about payoff – though in my opinion, the song is so minimal that the relatively calmer chorus/bridge blended just fine into the mood. I might even argue a bigger chorus would’ve disrupted the flow of the song a bit.

This is more off topic, but I am so in love with Wonwoo’s solo from this album, Leftover. A full rock ballad, it’s got the exact type of soaring melodic line that I /live/ for. Never Ending Story by Boohwal style. So good!!

As for why these two: I imagine this is kicking off a new era for Seventeen with more unit promotion – they do have 78 possible duo combos alone, after all! If I remember correctly, Seventeen plans to remain active throughout the members enlisting, but with some being gone, it’d be a great chance to experiment with different groups. SVT’s mixed units have always been really nice – BSS, Flower, Space, Rocket, Network Love, Bring It, Beautiful, Hey Buddy & the other age line units from Semicolon – so it’s always great fun!

Logistically, this is a good place to start given their signifcant popularity both domestically and overseas (Jeonghan in Japan, Wonwoo in China). But further than just that, it seems Jeonghan and Wonwoo’s aesthetic and musical vision lined up really well for this project. This song has been accompanied with the deepest lore/storyline that carats have seen in a while. There’s even an audiobook – written by an award-winning author & read by Jeonghan and Wonwoo – coming out! It’s pretty exciting.

This is a longer comment than I intended ah, sorry! Thank you for reviewing Seventeen!
