Ex-LOONA member Chuu established a solo career late last year with a pair of singles that cast her as a synth-pop chanteuse. I can’t say I recall anything about either song, even though I remember enjoying them upon release. New track Strawberry Rush opts for something brighter and quirkier — a smart move for someone aiming for solo stardom.
The first thing I noticed about the teasers for Strawberry Rush was their nod to eccentric K-pop pioneers Crayon Pop, as Chuu donned a similar helmet in the music video. This made me hope she’d fully embrace a campy sense of absurdity, complimenting her colorful personality with music that felt equally charismatic.
As a song, Strawberry Rush plays things much safer. It’s a pleasant synthpop track, reserved in both its production and melodies. This sound suits Chuu’s voice and occasionally allows for personality to poke through. The halted rap phrasing during the verses has potential to develop into something more signature, but the song is too married to the breezy sound of its chorus to fully step outside the lines. This results in a somewhat slight return with flashes of promise.

Unfortunately this is just a very inoffensive anime closing theme. Very JPop.
It reminds me a lot of Yerin (GFRIEND) but her stuff has been a lot more dynamic.
When are we getting another ‘Heart Attack’?

Music video-wise, I enjoy the fact that it seems she’s creating her very own universe with the return of the yeti-esque character.
This feels more in line of Chuu’s individual color – cute, vibrant, and an utter joy to watch. But I agree in that it feels super safe. I’ll probably have it on loop for a day, but it’ll be way too easy to move onto the next track.

I’m noHmm. I’m not really digging it. I started following Choo with her solos last year, wasn’t bif fan of Loona. So I only know her from the Howl EP. The album and song was a breath of fresh air. It was very indie/alternative pop, something we don’t really get in K-pop that often. I really, really loved it. It was perfect. This new song and album are just… hmm. Not my style. It’s way too bright and kitsch, it’s not a bad song, just not something I wanted. I understand now, that she is fun and lively and that’s what her fans wanted. But I only know her from Howl, so I have a completely different opinion of her, I guess. I thought she is a cool, eccentric singer-songwriter. I’m forcing myself to listen to it now, because I spent a lot of money on the album LOL
