B.D.U is a project group spawned from MNET’s reality show Build Up: Vocal Boy Group Survivor and consists of M.O.N.T’s Bitsaeon, CIX’s Seung Hun, One Pact’s Jay Chang and trainee Kim Minseo. While I love the idea of a show focused on K-pop’s often-underutilized vocalists, I’d rather the entire industry make a shift toward robust vocal melody. B.D.U’s debut mini album promises a spotlight on singing. With this in mind, title track My One feels more like a bunt than a home run.
The song’s gentle synth and sentimental melodies create a healing atmosphere that makes for an easy listen. I’m happy the group didn’t opt for a straightforward ballad, but even with its sprightly tempo I want more from My One. Instead of head-turning vocal showcases, this sounds like a track you could find on the latter half of any boy group album. It’s sung well, but the performance doesn’t feel particularly notable. The track’s calling card is a satisfying shift into head voice during the chorus. I wish this moment soared even more than it does. Where are the harmonies? The spine-tingling climaxes?
Overall, My One is a fine pop song. It just feels like false advertising given Build Up‘s mission statement. Maybe my expectations were simply out of whack, but I hope the guys are given more exciting material in the future.

can i just say im getting tired of this “airy” vocal tone that’s favored by a lot of these bg singers? its like they’re tryna be like a budget jungkook (one of the only ppl who can execute this tone well imo)

A related pet peeve is the influence of the BTS dance style. The vigorous arm waving and position changes that preclude any possibility of actual live singing.
Like these guys, this song. GORGEOUS. Yeah, but the choreo as is means they will never truly sing it live live. Like the movements starting at 1:19, wtf. Sheesh. This song needs quiet choreo for the actual vocalists, and backup dancers to do the interpretive stuff.

And then the producers lean heavily on the tinny button anyways, especially evident during the chorus. Hey Mr Producer! Go learn from the Infinite producer people how to do vocals correctly.
As for the song, I think it is actually pretty good. Not bad for a first turn out of the block. Not knocking it out of the park but, a solid first base hit advancing the runner to second.
