Song Review: tripleS Glow – Inner Dance

tripleS Glow - Inner DanceThe ambitious tripleS project is growing and multiplying faster than NCT ever did, with new units seeming to emerge every month. tripleS Glow is composed of members Chaewon, Sullin, SeoAh and JiYeon and they debuted with Inner Dance (내적 댄스) last week. Now, they’ve released a performance video to add a visual aspect to the track.

If there’s one musical trend I wish would fade into the background, it’s this soft, airy dance sound that favors flat melodies and disinterested vocal performances. Google classifies Inner Dance as “Atlanta Bass,” which I suppose is different than the similarly featherlight “Jersey Club” favored by many K-pop acts this year. Fans of these specific sub-genres will likely be able to parse out the unique qualities of each track, but the overall energy doesn’t engage me enough to put in the effort.

Inner Dance has a few cool production quirks. The last few seconds are by far the most interesting, as synths spiral upward and give the impression that the song is about to exert some real effort. But before Inner Dance can fulfil this promise, the song has ended. Elsewhere, the girls’ voices are forged into a faceless, 90% air performance that wafts by without consequence. It’s “vibes o’clock” here, and if that’s your thing Inner Dance supplies yet another track to add to the long playlist.

  1. def their weakest song yet. the lyrics made me cringe just a little bit. i’m also kinda tired of the social media theme, it feels like a watered down generation/rising and i’m sure there are other ways to relate to teenagers (which i assume is who they’re making this music for).

  2. It seems to me that tripleS is really fast fashion in kpop form. Kpop is usually about following trends, rapidly, but this entity here seems to be the drop shipper Shein of kpop.

As for the latest installment of easy breezy, it is still a pass for me, just like how I walk past the Forever 21 in the mall, those few times I go to the mall.

Hey kids! If you like this style but want something with more substance, more there there, may I suggest Everything But the Girl. Hubby had their last album “Fuse” on repeat last year.

  3. Actually my gripe here is the melody. The first part of the chorus is maddeningly annoying. Can’t tell you why, but specifically the melody, not the singing, is ticking me off.
