Song Review: BADVILLAIN – Hurricane

BADVILLAIN - HurricaneWhen BADVILLAIN made their debut last month, that self-titled track captured me with its symphonic bombast. However, it quickly did a nose dive on my playlist, proving that exciting production can only take you so far when the song itself is mostly just shouty posturing. I’m (im)patiently waiting for the day a new group can successfully forge both elements together to craft a modern classic.

Alas, that won’t be happening with follow-up track Hurricane. Here, the girls have jettisoned the ambitious production in favor of a skittering electro riff (cool!) and a familiar trap beat (less inspiring). The song does a nice job showcasing the group’s rappers. It doesn’t sound too far from what fellow rookies Young Posse are releasing. The energy remains relentless all the way through, driven by the girls’ performance. I love the interaction between their voices and the electronic production.

Sadly, the song lacks stakes. It plays as a flat line all the way through, constantly moving forward but never toward a destination worth waiting for. The journey is fun on its own and works as a cypher-like structure, but when we get to the sung chorus, the hook lacks punch, waffling when it should definitively stomp its foot.

  1. I really like the song but I haaaaate the decision BPM made to not put this track with their debut EP and to lower the key once they finally release the song! The original key this song had was so much better! But other than that, they’re a talented group. I think their talents and performances are what keep me intrigued.

  2. Meh, the riff is cool, but that’s pretty much it. 7.25’s the perfect rating.

And btw, what are your thoughts on Yah-ho (Badtitude)? Badvillain dropped the MV for it last month, so I’d love to know what are your thoughts on it? How’d you rate it?

  3. No way, imo this is their best song so far! I love Badvillain (the song) but I think Hurricane should have a higher rating. The hook was what captured my attention the most but I also just love the rapping and energy they provide through the song. I also like the original key better, but I quickly got used to this one and you’ll understand that they lowered it for the girls to be able to sing it live on stage while dancing! I like to look at these songs through ‘enjoyability’ and not other technical parts of the production of the song, so I’d def give this a 10/10!

(Also I’ve been waiting for a review on this ever since they released the full ver. so thank you!)

  4. Initially thought this was a Young Posse release.

It’s OK, just not my cup of tea.

How much money does BPM have btw? How are they going to recoup this investment, lol. There’s a limit to how much revenue Taemin’s abs can generate.
