Sometimes songwriters do my job for me. If you’re going to call a song “Gibberish,” it had better buck expectations by not being the latest in the long line of ‘K-pop boys mumble and growl random things for two and a half minutes.’ Going into this track, I didn’t exactly have my hopes up. The Boyz’ Japanese work has been hit or miss, to say the least.
Gibberish doesn’t completely avoid tropes, but a hefty dose of rock guitar and stomping beat elevate its sillier instincts. There’s still a random “hakuna matata” in the dire second verse and the chorus is absolutely ridiculous:
“You say blah, blah blah, with the nobi-dobi-da
Shaba-ya-ya, all I hear is gibberish, gibberish”
That couplet could pretty much sum up my critique of many boy group releases. Thanks, The Boyz!
With songs like this, I feel like I need to rate them based on level of obnoxiousness. In that grand scale, Gibberish is… not very. It’s harmless fluff that seems to be in on its own joke. I’d certainly appreciate more melody and less obvious phrasing, but I enjoy the chugging guitar and the few moments their layered vocals take the spotlight.

Ugh, another typical Japanese title track from The Boyz. The only one I’ve grown to like is Breaking Dawn (which is maybe because of its proximity to Prism).
However, their recent b-side to some future unreleased album Bite Back is really good…a much more successful Latin-influenced song than Stray Kids’ Chk Chk Boom, I think.

I like this, for me it’s an 8,25/10 maybe more after more listening 😁.

this was unbelievably awful, I’m surprised the rating isn’t at least a 6. of all the songs released today, the ones I enjoyed aren’t k-pop (Angel Of My Dreams by Jade & 15 MINUTES by Madison Beer).

I remember the days when groups used to release some of their best material in Japan…what happened?

Unfortunately, a ton of new J-pop idol music (mostly the stuff directly managed by Korean companies) is going down this sonic route, so I think the actual K-pop groups are just following suit.

It felt almost like a joke. The intentions are so unclear that I can’t even say it’s camp. I love hating it and I hate loving it at moments.
For some reason, if feel like they’re too many guys in the song and especially in the MV at the end.
The song, lyrics and video take the fun weirdness of k-pop and pushes it towards psychotic. Sad because I like The Boyz and I know this could’ve been much better/nicer 😬.
(the drake/kendrick beef is spilling into k-pop because I’ve never been “I’m the biggest hater, I hate the way you look, the way you sound, …” to so many recent releases 🤣🤣)
