K-Pop’s One Hit Wonders: Cats – Baby Cat

Cats - Baby CatK-pop idols thrive on building a steady, dedicated fan base. This is most often accomplished by a constant stream of releases and deluge of content. But within the vast K-pop industry, there are more than a few “one hit wonders” – acts who release one single or album and are scarcely heard from again. It’s time to look back at some of these unknown treasures and give them the attention they deserve.

Cats made their debut in 2007 under Logi Entertainment and – like many rookies of their time – came out swinging with a full album. This was promoted with title track Baby Cat, establishing an obvious theme for the group. Given this information, you might expect a ton of aegyo meows and sugary sweet pop music, but the song is slinkier and more mature than its title suggests.

Listening to Baby Cat in 2024, the group’s robust vocal line feels very refreshing. The girls have a deeper tone and throatier performance style that lends itself to the song’s stomping production. The chorus is especially nice, surging forward with plenty of fanfare. We’re even treated to an elusive key change as Baby Cat swerves into its finale. A catchy rap bridge completes the package, making this a more than worthy addition to K-pop’s second generation.

  1. Ooh, a new series? 👀 Oh well, the song’s pretty jazzy or funky or both, and I like the vocal performance here.

    8.5 for now (8, 9, 8, 9), but let’s see how it ages!

  2. Aahh, this is a very interesting series. Can’t wait to find out more new acts. I’ve only been familiar with the SM cemetery that was Black Beat, S, Milk, and Isak N Jiyeon, so I’m excited to find out more about obscure kpop groups.

On the song, I enjoyed it, very nice!

  3. OMG!!!! When I read the title I almost yelled “THE AUDITION SONG!!!”

This song was used for the promotion of PC rhythm game Audition Online (which is still playable) and it was one of my favorite songs from the game.

This is very nostalgic for me and the melody of the chorus has never really left the corners of my mind, even after almost 15 years since I first heard it! After many years of listening to kpop, I still find this song’s singing and chorus very unique.

  4. hi Nick….if you had not of suggested this song, i probably would have never heard of this group or this song….i did not come into k-pop until 2013, but still, i had not heard of Cats….nice song, and i am a ‘sucker’ for good vocals, which they deliver on this song….i wonder what happened to them?

nonetheless, thank you for featuring their song and video on your Bias List….i would like to encourage you, if you have not done so already, to listen to a new group called 3piece….they debuted about a week ago (August 5) with the song, “Summer Feeling”….it is not probably ‘the best’ summer k-pop song, but i think it is a very nice one….also, the reason i ask that you give them a listen – and possibly write about them in The Bias List if you like them – is because one of the members of their group, their main vocalist, is Soo (Ahn Sohyeon), a.k.a. Jerry in Tahati….she is a powerful vocalist….i really enjoyed her short time in Tahiti before they disbanded….
