Song Review: KAVE – Legend

KAVE - LegendAfter uniting on a band version of Gaho’s Start Over in 2020, KAVE have transformed into an actual group with a proper debut. Fronted by Gaho, the band boasts an eclectic mix of producers that add a unique touch to Korea’s K-rock scene. Legend acts as their first title track and delivers a mix of grit and polish.

If you didn’t know this was a rock band, you might mistake Legend for a rock-tinged idol group track. The bounding percussion practically begs for a charismatic dance routine while the shouted chorus isn’t too dissimilar from what groups like Stray Kids are delivering. This blurring of genres and expectations works in Legend‘s favor, helping KAVE stand out among other rock acts. I’m not doing backflips over any of the song’s melodies, but I love the intensity and conviction with which they’re delivered. From Gaho’s gutsy vocals to the jagged textures of the guitar, KAVE really throw down here. I’m especially taken with the pre-chorus, which pulses with addictive rhythm and fierce charisma.

  1. This was recommeded to me on youtube and as I’m listening, i’m like wait, I really like the lead singers voice. Sonof course I go to kpop profiles and see that it’s Gaho…like where have I been? Man, I loved his voice when I first heard him with PLT (rip…I loved their songs).

His tone works so well with different genres, its pretty impressive. I’m not much of a rock fan but I can appreciate good vocals and I love a bass guitar…I really enjoyed this.

  2. YASSSSSSS

    FLOVE

So, yes, its like a Stray Kids + Xdinary Heroes, with a heck of a lot more polish and panache. I mean, you can get a steak dinner at many places. You can go to Outback Steakhouse, or Ruth’s Chris, or you can go to Le Cellier. The song also bears a passing resemblance to Monsta X “Beautiful Liar”, a rock edit version, as the beats it hits and structure are similar. Also Dreamcatcher, if they had a rock band behind them.

The vocals are just so good, hit every note, and you are not wondering “but can he do that live”. Yes, yes he can. effortless go from a growl to a high falsetto and back again. The song is laid out for a kpop group, as if different people would sing the different parts, but Gaho just charges right through all the parts with ease.

And then a great full on rock band turned up to 11 with raucous guitar solo. Fun fact: darling daughter has evolved from Dreamcatcher to full on Metallica. Exam morning pep songs have evolved from TST “Mind Control” to “Master of Puppets”. She is going to love this one.

The song. Its only 2:40, but its a full meal. We often talk about the 2-minute songs as one idea repeats. This song packs a full course in, says what it wants to say, then end within the duration expected these days.

JYP people: pay attention to how it is done.

    Easily a 9+ for me.

  3. It was love at first listen! I’m a sucker for this sound. 9/10

Somewhat unrelated but I was sort of dragged to that Xdinary Heroes Showcase in NY and they actually blew my mind. They played/sang live and sounded really well. Even songs I don’t like and never will (Haircut, Strawberry Cake, Happy Death Day, etc…) were enjoyable live. The guys’ personalities were absolutely adorable and endearing and I kind of fell for them. Before Sunday, I only had “Little Things” and “The Ghost” on my playlist. I added “Until the End of Time”, “Good Enough”, “Dreaming Girl” and still on the fence about “Test Me” and “Freaking Bad”🙃
