Song Review: Gyeongree (Nine Muses) – Cherry

Gyeongree - CherryLast year, it was reported that Nine Muses might be regrouping for a reunion comeback. I’d love to see it, as their discography is one of K-pop’s most underrated gems. But a year later, it seems that the news might have been a pipe dream — and judging by recent returns from groups like Infinite and Kara, it’s unlikely they would retain the production that made them amazing in the first place. So in the meantime, we’ll make do with solo releases.

Park Gyeongree is a longstanding member of the group, joining in 2012 just as Nine Muses were finding their Sweetune-produced groove. She’s released a few singles since 2017, but Cherry marks a comeback after three years and her first work under new agency Label Sayu. It’s a subdued return, floating along a soft, rhythmic instrumental. Her vocals glide with effortless poise, injecting an airy texture that works well with this style of song. The melodies are slight, but the verses have a satisfying flow that feels almost conversational. I don’t know that I’ll ever return to this simply because it’s not a sound I prefer, but I appreciate what Cherry‘s doing and Gyeongree pulls it off well.

  1. It’s so rare to have no notes on a song’s verses; they were perfect. I would’ve liked some harmonies in the chorus and a small (?) rewrite. It opens fine, but they do the same melody twice. Instead, change it up the second time through or add a new melody in-between. It feels like a no brainier to me. The outro was good but where’s my bridge?! Kyungri is a decent vocalist, she can pull off a punchy bridge.

the video had a very simple premise, but it was funny and more enjoyable than all the usual stuffed kpop video. It’s not often I feel like the song could’ve been deserving of a higher budget video, usually I feel the opposite

  2. I wonder why groups aren’t going back to their old collaborators. They would know, even more than we do, how integral those producers are

Also reunion’s probably off the table, but what lineup would we even get? The nine muses A one? I would love that, but I would want to see one of the larger lineups (particular the prima Donna one) but I know that’s a tough ask
