Nine years into their career, it’s amazing how immensely popular DAY6 have become. Their 2019 title track Time Of Our Life has (rightfully) become a sleeper hit on the charts, while newest single Welcome To The Show has also experienced a boomerang over the past few months. The group boasts a robust back catalog, and it seems that Korea is more than happy to dive in again and again. Stacked against this history, Melt Down (녹아내려요) sounds more like a victory lap than a standout in its own right.
DAY6 have smartly reverted to the celebratory energy of Time Of Our Life, poised to build upon that late-career success. I’m sure there are better descriptions, but this rollicking rock energy always recalls images of running (frolicking?) through a grass field as spring begins to bloom. Melt Down takes this style in a heavier direction, setting its buoyant chorus against verses that feel more confrontational.
As is often the case with great pop music, Time Of Our Life harnessed an incredible series of singalong melodies perfectly poised for stadium performances. Melt Down attempts a similar approach but the chorus struggles to scale the same emotional or cathartic heights. It’s super solid, but without a unique calling card the song threatens to fade into a catalog already stuffed with excellent singles.

Fourteen years? Day6 have only been around for almost 9 years. Their 9th anniversary is on September 7.

lol I don’t know what math I was doing. I swear I counted nine and then my fingers typed fourteen for some reason? 😑

Its one of those games where you move one match stick to change 9 into 14.

I feel more positive about this one, would give it an 8.5 at least for now, it’s kinda got a nice distinct idea, plus the lyrics give it a great advantage for me. On the album I pretty much like everything, but for now Monster feels like the most interesting track

“Time of your life” is a sleeper hit? Well, awesome! It has the driving skittering drums of contemporary kpop girl groups except make it actually drive to a point.
This one here does sound like back catalog for Day6 circa that era, but it is still good and I will take it.
My favorite is “days gone by” from late 2018 which is the true eightiest eighties song ever. The clarity vocals, the synth sound and chords, the call and response in multiple vocalists in the chorus (with falsetto too). It brings me back to my misspent youth. It is also quite good.
(I can’t decide if its closer to Mister Mister or Glass Tiger or The Hooters, but its one of them.)

I liked this, more than Welcome to the Show, which was a faller for me. But I agree it does not reach the heights of Time of our life, the chorus isn’t as memorable to me.
Album is pretty good too.
