Song Review: Yuqi ((G)I-DLE) – Radio (Dum-Dum)

Yuqi - Radio (Dum Dum)The line between “promoted single” and “special track” continues to blur in the K-pop market. Yuqi’s Radio (Dum-Dum) is classified as the latter, but comes with a lo-fi music video to give it extra visual punch. Of all the (G)I-DLE members, Yuqi’s solo work has struck me most dramatically. I’d still take her 2021 Bonnie & Clyde over any track released by the full group.

Radio (Dum-Dum) is less sonically bombastic than Bonnie, but its amiable pop groove compliments her husky voice. Guitar and percussion blend to create a sturdy backbeat, giving the production a satisfying fullness. Nothing about the song will reinvent any genre, but its rhythm is surprisingly sticky and allows Yuqi to bend her vocals in ways that amplify her on-record personality. There’s a mid-2000’s American radio sheen to the track that feels both nostalgic and timeless. I don’t know that I’ll remember it by the time the year-end countdowns roll around, but for now it’s an endearing, enjoyable listen.

    • It’s from their tour, my guess is that they’re going to release it once the tour is over. Yuqi just put it out on YouTube for her birthday. Miyeon also has an unreleased song from the tour, so I’m really curious if they’re going to be giving all of the member solo tracks on their next album- we’ll have to wait and see.

  1. “Bonnie & Clyde” is an awesome song, as is the Double A side “Giant”, Darling daughter still occasionally cues them up on the ipods.

This one here is fine, a friendly mid-tempo by any mezzosoprano girl ever.
